VHS : Hobson's Choice
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he plans to keep it ... Read More

In my humble opinion, some of the best movies I've ever seen were good old classics like this one. Although I am only 22 years of age, Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors, and this is my favorite of Hitchcock's works. Doris Day outdid herself as the mourning mother, and the two of them did a very good job playing a married couple. I think this movie, as far as the acting is concerned, was way ahead of its time. Method acting was still in its infancy (if that) but the two of them did such an outstanding job, especially in the scene when Jimmy Stewart's character first tells Doris Day's character that their son has been kidnapped. The boy was my only complaint about the whole movie. Kids really didn't know how to act back then. So if you're looking for a good mystery/suspense as only Hitchcock ... Read More

VHS : The Devil's Widow (Tam Lin)
I really wish a DVD existed of this movie! In 1972, I was channel-surfing in the middle of the night and came upon an airing of Tam Lin, halfway through the movie. I was 19 then, and the movie seemed mystical and surreal to me; for quite a while I could not figure out what was going on except it involved Janet and Ian and Ava and ominous overtones, and I was blown away. As the movie neared the end I recognized the Tam Lin theme, but the movie was shown under the Devil's Widow title and "modernized", although the music seemed to have appropriate medieval overtones...but I never made a firm link to Tam Lin until years later ...and I never saw the movie again. But I'd like to, because it seemed to me that it suceeded in conveying the atmosphere of Faerie and the glamor (in its old sense) that confuses and ... Read More

This was a very good movie, although, as usually found-- it doesn't quite go along with the "original" version-- or what actually happened. Even so, it's a good movie and inspiring for people of all ages.

VHS : The Importance of Being Earnest
This is without doubt THE classic film version of the classic Oscar Wilde social comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest. Featuring the best British stage and screen actors of the time beautifully realised by the famous Anthony Asquith it is one of those few films that can be enjoyed over and over both as a supreme example of the Wilde wit and for the gusto with which the actors revel in their performance of this satire on the British upper class. Cannot be bettered.

VHS : Abominable Snowman
An expedition searches for the Yeti of Tibet. These creatures, they learn, are far more superior to men. Using their powers of telepathy, the Yeti begin killing the members of the expedition in order to keep their existence a secret.

"The Abominable Snowman" is a perfect blend of science fiction and horror and was created by those who brought us the highly successful Quatermass films. It stars Hammer horror icon Peter Cushing as a botanist and Forrest Tucker (Sergeant O'Rourke from the TV series "F Troop") as a trapper.

Released in 1957, "The Abominable Snowman" was filmed in black and white. Pity it couldn't have been shot in color as were the Hammer horror classics, "Horror of Dracula, "The Mummy," and "The Curse of Frankenstein." However, since the beautiful, snow covered Himalayans ... Read More

This was the first "grown-up" film I saw, when it was first released, back in 1951. It was on TV the other night and I found it as exciting as ever, full of psychological mystery and exhilarating chases against some beautiful scenery. Trevor Howard would be a match for Daniel Craig anytime and Jean Simmons is lovely as the vulnerable trapped "butterfly" of the title. I highly recommend it to anyone who liked "The 39 Steps" or "North by Northwest"
