VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section dominated (electric bass, drums, guitar and keys). Therefore, it may have been difficult for a Marsalis, a horn player, to appreciate.

Why refer to Marsalis and not Burns? Because nearly all of Burns' analysis depends upon the ... Read More

VHS : Super Mario Bros
I saw this when I was a kid, and though I wasn't exactly a huge fan of it, I did collect quite a few of the trading cards. Saw it again just recently. Though it augments a couple of the ideas from the Super Mario series (Thwomp Stompers, Goombas, etc), Super Mario Bros is nothing like those early Nintendo games. Rather than being a colourful, cute and varied fantasy, the world of the "Mushroom Kingdom" is trashy and dirty, full of crime, cars, cages and sci-fi explanations. Still, I found it entertaining enough, I loved Bob Hoskins as Mario, particularly his scenes in New York as a plumber and his banter with Luigi. Plus, the film captures a style and an era that is thoroughly interesting.

Mario and his kid brother Luigi are plumbers, and after finishing a job run into Daisy, a student ... Read More

Stars fade, in time. But, at the summit of her talents and her popularity, Whitney Houston was simply untouchable, a singing phenom and, lord, was she lovely. Being so photogenic, it was a natural that she dip her toe into cinema. Whitney made her film acting debut in 1992's THE BODYGUARD, starring opposite Kevin Costner, who himself at the time was riding on a film career high, coming off Dances with Wolves - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) and JFK - Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition).

Costner plays Frank Farmer, an ex-Secret Service agent who now hires out as a private bodyguard. Frank's vocation requires him to live a solitary, almost austere life. He doesn't stay too long at any one assignment for fear of forming attachments to the people he safeguards. Considered the best, ... Read More

haunting...

McNamara murders hundreds of thousands during his career, and then finds a way to forgive himself anyway.

A must see, that is well shot and scored, unique, and worth watching multiple times.

In this first monty python movie there are a lot of famous skits. Well the movie is based on the best of monty python so thats why it is such a good movie. My personal favorite skit is upper class twit of the year. It ends the movie perfectly. I recommend it to people 11 years old and up. No kids under ten. I hope if you buy this movie you will enjoy it.

I saw this film only once -- on CBC television's "The Passionate Eye" -- in 1992, but I will always remember it. It was the first time I learned of Nixon's dirty tricks campaigns against Jerry Vorhees and Helen Cahagan-Douglas in the 1940's and the 1950s. There is also some interesting stuff on Nixon's role in the Hiss trial. The film is both irreverant and serious at the same time. I hope and pray that the executors of the de Antonio estate have the good sense of re-releasing this film on DVD.
