VHS : Treasure Island (1990)
This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. Filmed on location in Jamaica and on the awesome ship Hispaniola, the scenery and cinematography are marvelous.

And the soundtrack is performed by The Cheiftains!
It is the best pirate soundtrack ever, adding great drama and realism to the proceedings, since the music seems so timely for the period.

Heston's Long John Silver is sensational, and his son Fraser's direction is ... Read More

VHS : Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming / TV Movie
Never had it crossed my mind that Ian Fleming himself was once an agent himself. After viewing this neat TV movie it doesn't surprise me how Fleming was inspired to create his literary hero, soon to become cinematic emblem.

The movie begins with the origin of young Ian Fleming, he was a son of rich parents, he never needed anything, and everything was at his disposal. As we see him transcend to young adulthood we see a very similar persona to that of 007. We see him as a womanizer and a man of wit and class. shortly in the film he is expelled from various private schools due to misadventures with women. His mother decides to put him in a military academy so he can learn a lesson...he ends up doing the same thing; finally his mother decides to put him in a news bureau known as Reuters. ... Read More

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it when it was released. What acting! Don't you love to hear Richard Burton's voice? And Ms. Bujold...her acting makes the part. Now for some good news I wanted to share. I went to the Universal Movie Studios website, actually to ask them when the TV series Centennial might ever be released on DVD (another absolute favorite of mine) and it says on the site that on Sept. 18, 2007 it will be released on DVD as a 2-movie collection: Anne of The Thousand Days and Mary, Queen of Scots. Did I make anyone else's day like reading that made mine? Hope so.

VHS : A Guy Named Joe
A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through ... Read More

VHS : The Birds II: Land's End
It figures. Something like this was bound to happen to me. After viewing all the reveiws off amazon, I was just a bit curious of The Birds II. It sounded exciting, but compared to everyone else's opinion, I seriously didn't think much of it. Somehow I predicted once I bought it, I would make a regret, but no. I actually liked it. To tell the truth, I make no regrets about buying it. I loved it, which is the problem. In B low-grade movies everyone else despises, I end up to be the one who breaks that chain. That's me of course. I suggest this movie to anyone who likes sequels to good movies. Not as good as the original, but good.

VHS : Wise Blood
This great, unjustly forgotten John Huston film has fallen by the wayside, and that's a real shame. A striking cinematic adaptation of the Flannery O'Connor novel, Wise Blood boasts Brad Dourif in the lead role, Hazel Motes, and Dourif nails it. When you see the film, you realize it would be really tough to imagine anyone else alive at the time being able to carry off the role. Harry Dean Stanton, as usual, adds his terrific skills as the "blind" preacher Asa Hawkes, and Ned Beatty is also along for the ride as singing preacher Hoover Shoates.

Motes, Hawkes, and Shoates--all preachers. This is O'Connor country, and Huston himself shows up as another preacher, Hazel Motes' grandfather, who spews fire and brimstone, inculcating his grandson in the fierce and vengeful ways of the Lord. And so Hazel grows up to preach ... Read More
