VHS : Forever Amber
Zanuck's elaborate and entertaining costume drama is arguably one of the era's most colorful and controversial films. Based on Kathleen Winsor's lush and scandalous (at the time) book, this film is a beautiful example of Technicolor spectacle at its finest. Sadly, the DVD version advertised here (the only way to see this film on DVD) appears to have been minted from a VHS copy, and a poor one at that. The film was censored and trimmed almost beyond repair before its release, and this print (like the existing VHS copies) eliminates the final scene, in which Amber accepts the invitation of King Charles' secretary to be his mistress, and the opening prologue, in which it was promised Amber would "pay" for her casual sexuality. The image itself is muddy, often too dark to see in night scenes, and ... Read More

This is my all time favorite movie. I recently purchased it for the younger generation and it was a hit with them as well. This movie transcends time and ages. Very entertaining with a positive message. Two thumbs up!

a tremendous entry in the delightful amicus multi-scary-story films of the 1960s and 70s . all are worth checking out (ownership of all titles is a great investment) . they just don't make them like this any more . and never will again .

VHS : Pretty Woman
One of those movies you watch every time it comes on television because it's so cute, yet one of those movies you're almost ashamed to adore because it has almost no redemptive features; `Pretty Woman' has become an instant classic for almost no reasons at all. Sure, it's cute, but so aren't a lot more respectable films.

Oh yeah, I forgot; Julia Roberts is amazing here.

So, that answers all questions doesn't it? Why do we love this movie? We love it because it gave us Julia, our beloved Julia. She is charming and warm and heartbreaking and moving and memorable and sincere and we just want to eat her up in every scene. The problem with `Pretty Woman' is that when you take Roberts' magnetism out of the equation you have a rather empty film that relies on clichés to carry it ... Read More

VHS : Kingpin
I've never been a huge fan of the Ferrelly brothers (they surely aren't the Coen's) but this film starred Bill Murray (or so I thought) and I just love him so I had to watch it at least once. Truth be told, Murray is hilarious here in every frame he's in, but sadly he's just not in enough. Woody Harrelson, and to a lesser degree Randy Quaid, are funny in their own rights here, but neither of them can truly carry this film and it isn't really until Murray comes onto the screen that my attention was gotten and I found myself fully amused.

`Kingpin' tells the story of Roy Munson, a young guy who quickly rose to the top of the bowling world due to his dynamic skill and training. When he makes enemies with the greedy Ernie McCracken he finds that all is not fair in love and bowling. After an altercation ... Read More

VHS : Little Princess
Long before the 1995 remake supplanted the legendary Shirley Temple in the minds of young audiences; The Little Princess was a 1939 story set in Victorian England and starring the Academy Award winning actress. As a timeless story (now eighty years old) of perseverance in the face of adversity, the Little Princess evokes a full range of emotions rarely seen in modern cinema. You'll tear up as a young Shirley is forced from her home, but you'll laugh and smile during the film's dancing (Shirley is quite an accomplished tap dancer) and singing routines.

Film historians may delight to note that this was (to the best of my knowledge) the first Technicolor film that Temple starred in, and it noticeably shows, particularly when compared to some of Shirley's earlier works that have been newly colorized by classic ... Read More

I remember watching this film when i was 9 or 10 back in the late 50's or early 60's after mt father went to work and my mom was asleep. There have been three or four spin offs to this great film that don't even come close.I don't no for sure but it seems that they left something out of this makeover. It doesn't matter this is a five star movie, that i rated four because i was stupid and hit the four star and it won't let me change me it.

VHS : Stanley & Livingstone
Lost in the flood of great films in Hollywood's greatest year (1939), Stanley and Livingstone pays more attention to historical fact than most so-called history films of that era.

Of especial interest is the footage shot in Kenya by among others, the famous Osa Johnson. The African landscape and peoples shot by this second unit crew raise S&L far above the usual Tarzanesque studio back lot scenes that supposedly depict Africa (always jungle in those days, never veldt or mountains). Supervised by one Captain A. J. Klein, the actions shots involving actual Kenyans easily surpasses the competent and workmanlike Hollywood work of director Henry King.

The attack by outraged locals (lots of Samburu and Maasai hired for the occasion, I would guess) on Stanley's expedition, who believe it to be another slaver caravan, ... Read More

20th Anniversary Edition!.......Well it's got a good transfer and a few interesting extras, but what it is missing is the actual movie! The DVD has a altered version that removed the fact that Madison only changes back to a mermaid if she comes in contact with 'SALT' water! It doesn't destroy the film, but it does leave a sour taste in the mouth's of the people who saw the original theatrical version. The film is a very good romantic comedy/fantasy film, I would have given it a better rating if the DVD would have given both version of the film! BOOOOOOOOOOO :-(
