VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Overall well produced TV series and I watched intently with many emotions of passion, heartache, compassion, and joy for characters portrayed. The Stanwyk character was deplorable esp. with the line: on my mouth! YIKES!!! The aging process was well done for Cardinal Vittorio, Ralph, Grandma Fi, BUT Meggie looks more gorgeous every year, esp. the last scene, they tried to grey her hair, tho unevenly, during the same scene and nary a wrinkle....no biggie compared to her whisper yelling and flat dialogue, but very beautiful woman...Justine was prolly the worst cast in the series, waaay too wooden for a bohemian, maladjusted, wild child, head movements were even too stilted and not pretty enough to be Meggie's daughter...Dane portrayed the deepest expression of character as supported by the other ... I first saw this series while living in Japan as a child. Ever since, I dreamed of living on a ranch. I loved the book also, which I read after watching the series. I'll always remember the Crown V fondly, especially now that I've married into a cattle ranching family. :)

This is an excellent series for children over the age 10. There's enough adventure for all ages. The characters through the decades resonate throughout the whole series. It makes me want to read the book again.

Irwin Allen's follow-up to "The Poseidon Adventure" was a star studded spectacle with wonderful special effects and lots of suspense. Starring Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway and William Holden. Music by John Williams. Look for Maureen McGovern singing "We May Never Love Like This Again".

I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San Carlos - commuter trains are great for reading! The many opinions about the relative merits of the book vis a vis this excellent film are true, BUT, given the time limitations of the film format, details have to be dropped. Oh, yeah, one of the days when I was reading the book three ... Read More

I saw this movie in the movie theater when I was 10 years old. For years I looked for it to be on TV and have always considered it my favorite movie, even though none of my friends had ever seen it. When my now husband and I were dating we were talking favorite movies. He asked me what my favorite was and I told him it was one nobody had ever seen and did not tell him. I then asked him what his favorite movie was. He said it was also one nobody had ever seen and was called "The Slipper and the Rose". I knew then we were meant to be together! Twenty-four years later it is still the favorite movie for both of us.

I bought the DVD and CD when it finally became available. Love the story, love the music, love the actors. Not your usual Cinderella story because of the twist at the end. I especially ... Read More

This is one of my favorite movies. The music is great. The acting is great. For me, everything is great except that it also has many sad scenes, however we have to understand that it is an interpretation of the life of Tchaikovsky.

I've watched my video copy of this movie twice. Enjoyed it both times. Plot may be kind of crazy, but so what? It's still a fun movie. The plot has been described successfully by another reviewer, so I'll not waste time describing it again.

Main reason I'm writing this "review". Here in the United States, this movie is known as MURDER BY PHONE. It was released on Warner Home Video. It runs 80 mins. I have a copy of it. BUT, THIS MOVIE WAS A CANADIAN-MADE FEATURE AND THE ORIGINAL RUNNING TIME WAS 95 MINS. IT WAS EDITED BY 15 MINS. FOR ITS AMERICAN RELEASE. HOW DO I KNOW THIS, YOU MAY ASK? WELL, SINCE YOU'VE GOT THIS FAR I WILL GLADLY EXPLAIN. I ALSO HAVE A VIDEO COPY ON THE ASTRAL VIDEO LABEL FROM CANADA. RELEASED IN 1983. RUNNING TIME IS 95 MINS AS STATED ON BACK OF THE BOX. TITLE ON FRONT OF BOX IS "BELLS". ... Read More

VHS : Shogun (2 Hour Feature)
Shogun is one of the best adaptations of a literary bestseller to the small screen. Superb acting, great scenery and great suspense story.
Too bad that one of the 5 discs is flawed. The picture stalls and there is no way to continue watching unless the skip button is used causing that a considerable part of the film is not possible to view.

9.The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces starring: Richard Chamberlain, Patrick McGoohan, Louis Jourdan, Jenny Agutter, Ian Holm

VHS : The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces
No offence to DiCaprio but Richard Chamberlain's duel role of "The Man in the Iron Mask" was definitely better. It amazes me only foreign versions of this on DVD are available. Why not a Region 1 version? Chamberlain did three wonderful Dumas classics, this "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "The Three Musketeers". The first two are not available on Region 1 DVDs after all these years. Great movie that I highly recommend for the whole family. Let's hope someone like Criterion gets the rights for both Chamberlain's Dumas movies that aren't available and does a proper job of releasing them. If you enjoyed this catch "The Three Musketeers" and "Shogun". - C. Luster
