Great performance by Cagney. As everyone else has mentioned - with so many BAD war movies out - where's the DVD of this?

VHS : Say Goodbye Maggie Cole
Because there won't be a dry eye in the place when Michele Nichols, a young leukemia patient, says goodbye to Susan Hayward's Dr. Maggie Cole. Darrin McGavin once again demonstrated he is one of Hollywood's most solid performers.

....and you know who you are...... this one's for you!

This is, hands down, one of the best of the stupid, tacky, impossibly poorly written and acted teenie-bop fifties movies ever. It even has a production number, "Puppy Love", sung by a dreamboat greaser-guy (later a vampire victim, his body discovered along with another unfortunate teen in an unbelievably contrived shot with major bad lighting. Tacky effects, even for the time, the same girl-to-vampire progression sequence repeated endlessly. You can also see a string holding the vampire mask onto the protagonist's head in a graveyard sequence.

I ADORE this movie. Yeah, where IS the DVD??????

From the days when it was a legal requirement to cast either Robert Carlyle or Rhys Ifans if you wanted to get lottery funding for a British film, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands is another in Shane Meadows' line of deeply disappointing films before he finally came into his own with Dead Man's Shoes. To be fair, the project went through major development Hell, and the results are all too obvious in the sketchy construction and characterization. Carlyle's bad boy spurred into winning back his wife Shirley Henderson (sporting the most irritating little girly voice in history) from nice guy Ifans after seeing her on a daytime TV show is never really developed or even properly introduced, and the plot, such as it is, doesn't get going until the movie is half over. The tone is awkward, with Carlyle ... Read More

5.The World Is Not Enough starring: Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise Richards, Robbie Coltrane
directed by: Michael Apted
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The World Is Not Enough
Brosnan's third Bond movie, The world is Not Enough, is high on action but weak on plot. Robert Carlyle is a pretty good villain but his motivations seem a bit unclear. Sophie Marceu is also very good as the main Bond girl, while Denise Richards' performance is weak and she's completely miscast. Leonard Maltin wrote that the movie makes M (Judi Dench) seem foolish, and he's right. From the earlier movies, I took her to be a bright woman, but in this one she's unbelievably stupid, considering she's the head of an intelligence agency (no pun intended).

I wish they had done some more rewrites on the script and replaced Denise Richards. It's still an enjoyable movie, but not as good as it could have been.

8.Riff-Raff starring: Robert Carlyle, Emer McCourt, Richard Belgrave, Jim R. Coleman, David Finch
directed by: Ken Loach

VHS : Riff-Raff
Director Ken Loach's RIFF-RAFF earned the 1991 European Film Award in the Best Film category. It was also Robert Carlyle's first film and the only screenplay written by Bill Jesse. Jesse was a former construction worker who used to put on paper little anecdotes about his work or about his comrades. For more information about him, buy the zone 2 DVD of RIFF RAFF available at Amazon.fr which offers as bonus feature a very interesting interview with Ken Loach.

RIFF-RAFF is more a comedy than a realist drama and some of its little stories are really hilarious like when Larry takes a bath in the sole fully equipped apartment of the building while veiled ladies are just about to visit this particular flat. The final scene of RIFF-RAFF reminds us that Ken Loach's characters, even if they belong to the ... Read More
