VHS : Our Friend Martin
I originally purchased this for a friend who is also a teacher, however after seeing it, I decided I wanted one for my classroom as well! It is a great mix of animation and actual footage. My friend teaches in the primary grades and we both felt additional instruction and explanation might be necessary for that audience. I teach upper elementary and the DVD will support a basal reader selection quite nicely and without additional instruction. Highly recommend.

If only this was on DVD, but we can't have everything. Great story and better than fair acting. When it comes out on DVD I'll be buying it again, if only for the scenery.

Great performance by Cagney. As everyone else has mentioned - with so many BAD war movies out - where's the DVD of this?

VHS : Roots 6 Video Box Set
Perhaps the most famous TV miniseries of all time. Played for eight straight evenings in January of 1977. The country practically came to a halt during that time slot every evening. Over 130 million views tuned in to watch this amazing story of Alex Haley's family's roots and history. It has been translated into 28 languages since. While the story and technology may seem a little outdated today (how can it not?), this is one story worth watching to gain a better understanding our country's history and where we have come from. In many ways it is the story of our nation from the days of slavery through the great struggles for freedom for all. Kunta Kinte is the main character who was captured and forced into slavery as a young man and brought to America. Perhaps the most poignant moment in the ... Read More

5.1984 starring: John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, Cyril Cusack, Gregor Fisher
directed by: Michael Radford

VHS : 1984
Michael Radford's adaptation of the well-known novel by Orwell is very faithful to its source material and very impressive. The cast is perfect in its leading trio: John Hurt as Winston Smith, Suzanna Hamilton as Julia and last but certainly not least in his last movie performance Richard Burton as O'Brien.

Orwell's dystopian vision of the future will be well known to most of us.
Winston Smith, the central character, lives in a totalitarian world, in which all pay homage to the ominous ever present "Big Brother" and, To sort of keep birth rates at an acceptable level, war is continually waged against some kind of enemy, that seems to change as much as wind direction whatever the fear mongers deem appropriate.

Inhabitants of this world are continually bombarded with ... Read More

VHS : Anne of The Thousand Days
I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it when it was released. What acting! Don't you love to hear Richard Burton's voice? And Ms. Bujold...her acting makes the part. Now for some good news I wanted to share. I went to the Universal Movie Studios website, actually to ask them when the TV series Centennial might ever be released on DVD (another absolute favorite of mine) and it says on the site that on Sept. 18, 2007 it will be released on DVD as a 2-movie collection: Anne of The Thousand Days and Mary, Queen of Scots. Did I make anyone else's day like reading that made mine? Hope so.

I saw this in the theater in '75 and I've never forgotten it. An excellent reincarnation movie that feels very realistic!! Michael Sarrazin is a veteran actor but this is the film I remember him from the most (along with "Gumball Rally"! - I can't believe it's not yet on DVD.

8.Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, Sandy Dennis, Agnes Flanagan

VHS : Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
I always have fun watching boozy George and Martha play "Get the Guest" throughout most of the two hours of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" New prof Nick and delicate waif-wife Honey accept a late, late nightcap invite from the dean's daughter, Martha, who happens to be married to has-been history professor George. You can't help feel sorry for Nick and Honey who have no idea what they are in for, as George and Martha hurl the most vicious insults at each other and replay the lowlights of their decaying marriage. In turn, Nick and Honey learn some unsettling things about themselves and their own wedded "bliss."

Elizabeth Taylor as Martha chews up the scenery and her fellow actors, though I hasten to add that I don't mean that pejoratively. You truly believe that she is a drunk, frustrated ... Read More

9.Where Eagles Dare starring: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern
directed by: Brian G. Hutton

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Where Eagles Dare
Clint Eastwood probably mowed down more of Adolf Hitler's German soldiers in Brian G. Hutton's "Where Eagles Dare" than he did western outlaws as either Sergio Leone's Man with No Name in the "Dollars" trilogy or criminals as "Dirty Harry" in his five Warner Brothers crime movies. Bestselling British author Alistair MacLean penned the splendid screenplay that he later converted into a much tamer novel about a team of elite British M.I. 6 secret agents that parachute into Germany to rescue one of the top-ranking officers with a mother lode of knowledge about the June 6th Normandy landings. This MGM blockbuster that runs 158 minutes is probably the greatest action-adventure movie with a World War II setting ever produced. We're talking wall-to-wall gunfire with more surprises and complications than most movies ever ... Read More

VHS : Doctor Faustus
I've always been a fan of Richard Burton. He was a powerful actor and a fascinating personality. His voice elevates whatever he speaks, whether it's Hamlet or a guest shot on "The Fall Guy." He was a man conflicted about everything in his life, battling the bottle and then everything else with the bottle. He went from a poor Welsh upbringing to starring in the biggest movie ever made (CLEOPATRA) and in love with the glamorous star in the world (Elizabeth Taylor).

So you would think that a man who appears to have made a Faustian bargain in his personal life would be perfect in a film of that legend...but I found the character inconsistent and it disrupted the movie as well.

As powerful as Burton can be, roaring and raging his way through the highs and lows of wisdom and damnation, I ... Read More
