VHS : Hamlet (1996)
I was overwhelmed by this production of Hamlet. Kenneth Branagh is wonderful and plays the part of Hamlet with such sensitivity and vitality - makes the unabridged lines accessible, even to people unused to Shakespeare. Kate Winslet is excellent. The whole cast and the scenes - especially the scenes - are staggeringly good. The only Hamlet on film, worth watching! Kenneth Branagh is a genius.

VHS : A Midwinter's Tale
This is an excellent film - just the right mix of humor, fun, drama, and intensity. I have several copies of the VHS version and have been looking for the DVD...but no. It boggles the mind that so much trash is churned out on DVD, yet good entertainment like "A Midwinter's Tale" is consigned to VHS. Go figure. Please release this on DVD.

First off I'm quite amazed, it seems EVERY other review on here is about the movie!! Well this is not the VHS, DVD or blu-ray, you have clicked on the CD version of Spiceworld, aka the very bearable soundtrack to the movie.

This album is great. Listening to it makes me realise what a lost society we live in now, where barely an original tune is released anymore. Spiceworld takes me back to not only my early teen years, but back to when music was great. The melodies are superb and catchy, and the lyrics mean something worthwile. Now for my song reviews:

1. Spice Up Your Life - 3/5. My least favourite track on the album, the one time I felt the girls had been pressured into a particular type of song to appeal for the first single. It's not bad, but it's not up ... Read More

VHS : Respectable Trade
After coming across this film quite accidentally on PBS, I found it thoroughly gripping, and agree completely with the other reviewers' high praise. I am adding my own words merely to encourage viewers not to overlook the extraordinary performance by Anna Massey as Sarah Cole. It is tempting to dismiss Sarah as a simple villain in this tale. However, I found Massey's stark performance deeply moving and expressive of Sarah's profound experience of displacement and loss. She is clearly the brains in her brother's business, for example, and depends on it for her own welfare, but is helpless to prevent its decline when Josiah begins to exclude her from his decisionmaking process. She is forced to abandon her lifelong home and lifestyle in pursuit of her brother's social pretensions. A proud and stoic ... Read More

Same set of characters over the same weekend at the same British country house. Each play takes place in one of the rooms with the characters coming and going between the plays. TNC had runs in London and NY where you saw the 3 plays on any 3 consecutive nights. A gimic - sure. The genius comes in the wonderful, funny writing where the full story and the full understanding of the characters and their relationships blossom with each play. Your understanding of even simple plot points evolves when you see the other plays and what went on in the other rooms leading up to and following the plot points. See it if you are a fan of britcoms. Marvellous cast at the top of their form.

This VHS tape of the first part of Norman Conquests is an excellent play, very well written and well acted. It is unfortunate that it is only available in VHS and not DVD but I was still pleased to be able to get it.

The play is hilarious and well worth watching.
