VHS : Eating Raoul
Paul and Mary Bland are a quiet couple who stumble upon a plan to get rich quick: They place a dominatrix ad in the paper to lure rich perverts to their apartment and then bop them on the head - hard - and steal their money. A petty crook named Raoul discovers their scam and wants in: He'll take the bodies, sell them to a dog food factory, and split the profit with them. Everything is going fine until Raoul decides he wants more than the bodies - he wants Mary.

This famous cult classic was made in 1982 on a shoestring budget; the sound is tinny, the sets are cheap, and all the actors, while experienced, act like amateurs. Director/Writer/Star Paul Bartel satirizes murder and sexual perversion and does it all with straight faces and matter-of-fact dialogue; Paul and Mary express ... Read More

VHS : Under the Piano
Any opera person will buy this neglected film for Teresa Stratas in a speaking role, and she does not disappoint. Where Stratas had a huge career, her character in the film is a never-was prima donna turned captious voice teacher and utterly failed mother whose rigidity drives one child away and another--a deeply autistic daughter--to attempt suicide. It is not a fun topic and it is not a fun movie, but a sad portrait of a family that cannot quite assemble itself to support its weakest OR its strongest links. Amanda Plummer is quite fine as the elder daughter, and Megan Follows is scarily real as the autistic girl. Hard to say "wonderful" about a film as sad as this, but there it is.

VHS : Snow White & Three Stooges
Fans of the Three Stooges may find themselves divided on whether or not they like this 1961 re-working of the fairy tale classic. Depending on the age group viewing, children might get bored during the long musical production numbers while waiting for the Stooges to return; die-hard Stooge fans might complain that the Stooges are taking a secondary role, providing much-needed comic relief for Olympic skater Carol Heiss & company; and others might find it a nice change of pace from all the Stooge's usual violent slapstick, and an utterly charming film.
To accomodate the plot, Moe, Larry & Curly Joe have replaced the Seven Dwarfs, Prince Charming is their companion on their travels, and of course, there are many musical numbers performed on ice skates to showcase Heiss' talents (along ... Read More

VHS : Sugartime
It's an excellently done film with a strong script, outstanding actors and acting, great cinematography and obviously a hefty budget. But though "based on a true story" it misses the mark on the McGuire Sisters by several country miles. Phyllis was never the sultry, conniving, sexpot portrayed here. She was, and is, very much in the All American mode. She happened to fall in love with a gangster. It's that simple. He wasn't handsome, he wasn't a great mind but had a charm and sincere love for her that captured her. To her credit she never denied knowing him or his being her friend even when it would have been easy to do just that. The film also portrays Christine and Dorothy as two dumbos when in real life the McGuires were smart, disciplined and extremely talented. They still are! They also were ... Read More
