VHS : Singing Nun
A must-see for those who did not grow up during the Debbie Reynolds' era. The music is melodious and the movie has a message. Great story, has everything, drama, comedy, unrequieted love, choices. Bittersweet ending for the viewer, joyful ending for the nun who asked the Lord for guidance, then let Him lead the way!

VHS : Madame X (1966)
So many people seem to like this film - Madame X. I don't. I 've seen
it on television and am glad I never saw it in a theater in 1966.
The cast is excellent (Lana Turner, John Forsythe, Burgess Meredith,
Ricardo Montalban, Joan Whats-Her-Name)but the plot and the schmaltzy
dialogue plus the tear-jerking conclusion leave me laughing and that's it.
Why was this movie made ? And as late as 1966. This is a 1940'-50's film,
in my opinion, and outdated by the Sixties. But so many people seem to like
it. Sentimentality. Sob, sob, sob......You can have Madame X. This should have been made as a farce....

VHS : Across the Wide Missouri
It is impossible to watch this at time breathtakingly beautiful movie without sadness not least because what survives is a mere fraction of the movie made by the great William Wellman -the studio interfered in the picture excising great swathes of the footage Wellman shot and adding a ponderous voice over narration declaimed in sonourous mannner by Howard Keel which adds nothing to the picture whatsoever .
It is a movie about the destruction of a way of life -that of the mountain men .The source material is a novel by Bernard de Soto which is based on the life of one such man , Flint Mitchell ,who controlled the trade with the Blackfoot Indians in the Rockies during the 1820,s .In many ways he was the very incarnation of the pioneer spirit , a trader and adventurer married to a Native American ... VHS : Neptune's Daughter
I have observed that one of the lesser known stars of the 1950's was a glamorous swimmer named Esther Williams. Her popularity had waned by the time I started going to the movies but I was reminded from time to time that she and Sonja Heiney (or whatever that ice-skating actress's name was) had a unique appeal for awhile. I noted that her movie, "Neptune's Daughter" won some minor Academy Award (probably for costume design) so I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. Fortunately, the cast included Red Skelton because I'm not all that certain I would have enjoyed this movie without his humor. There was a scene that had me laughing out loud in a room by myself. It had to do with a Spanish instruction record coming to the end of side one. Overall, I thought the plot was stretched a little bit thin but, ... Read More

VHS : The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad!
Based on the short lived "Naked Gun" TV series, this is the funniest of the 3 films.

Still 20 years later it is very funny.

Leslie is perfect doing Frank.

"Weird Al Yankovic is on the plane" just love this little cameo since I am a fan.

My favorite scene is during the baseball game when Leslie "Frank" is dress as the umpire & starts doing the calls per how the crowd reacts. I will replay that scene.

For an older DVD the extras on this are lacking.

So many memorable lines & gags.

The 1 down side to the 3 films is, now of course after history, OJ.

7.Latin Lovers (1953) starring: Lana Turner, Ricardo Montalban, John Lund, Louis Calhern, Jean Hagen

VHS : Latin Lovers (1953)
This is a fabulous romp...the sets ! the fashions ! Lana Turner's sculpted hair ! but most of all, the refreshing innocence of it.

Lana Turner is simply marvelous here, and Ricardo Montalban, looking hunk-o-rama good, is even better. Incredibly delightful is Louis Calhern's "Grandfather"...a deliciously writen and beautifully acted part.

The musical selections are wonderful (they look so gorgeous dancing the samba together !) and there are many extremely amusing scenes.

If you want to escape into a time when things were simple, sweet and fun, this will do it !

8.Battleground (1949) starring: Van Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, George Murphy, Marshall Thompson

VHS : Battleground (1949)
There were lots of war movies made during and after WWII, and many of them starred Van Johnson. Most of them chose to look at the heroic side of battle or the lives of the people at home supporting the troops. Battleground is different. It examines the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge, a group of men fighting to stay alive and in good humor amid death, destruction, and fear. This is a grim story and much more realistic than the typical MGM film.

The all star cast includes Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, George Murphy, Herbert Anderson, Scotty Beckett, and more. These men do a terrific job of bring a real incident to life. It is peppered with moments of humor like Johnson's bit with the eggs and moments of intense emotion. This collection of scenes makes for a powerful movie ... Read More

VHS : Star Trek - The Original Series, Episode 24: Space Seed
This episode has become such a classic that I can't withhold the 5-star rating. In the end, it earns its rating because of the well-matched, carefully balanced antagonism between the two main opponents, Khan (the irreplaceable Ricardo Montalban) and Kirk (Shatner, of course). This is a showdown between a genetically-enabled Might Makes Right philosophy and the democratic ideals of the Scientific Enlightenment. Best of all is the fact that the "bad guy" is not superficial or one-dimensional. He says things like "We offered the world order" and "Join me. I will treat you well." He is not easily defeated by any means.

From the moment he is picked up by the Enterprise, Khan schemes to take over the ship. Born as a result of 20th-century experiments in genetics, Khan is physically and mentally superior. He believes that he can ... Read More
