This will be a Christmas gift so I haven't actually watched it yet. However, I am pleased with the timeliness of the shipping. The dvd looks to be in great shape. The price was about what I expected. Overall, all has been great. I just couldn't give the 5 stars yet because I haven't actually watched it.

VHS : The Pirates of Penzance
There was much controversy over the release and re-broadcast of this version, with Ronstadt playing Mabel. While the rest of the title cast (Kline, Rose, Smith, etc.) were marvelous, Ronstadt was selected to play Mabel for her "star" status at the time - and the raw outlook, that she was a country-western singer, NOT an opera or classical voice. Apparently she had worked for many weeks prior to shooting Pirates in order to enhance and "ready" the soprano she needed to portray Mabel. Not an easy feat, as she is no classical soprano. Through most of the chorus songs, and her solos, her lyrics are quite muddy, and you will notice during the round of 'Poor Wandering One' her inevitable country 'twang' seeps in, but is ALMOST rescued by a genuine sweeping soprano lyric.

However, her ... Read More

VHS : Blast From the Past
Blast From the Past starring Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Sissy Spacek, and Christopher Walken is a funny and interesting film but I haven't got a clue what happened at the end of the film, which makes this feature unmemorable. Great acting and plot but this film didn't grab right away, some of the dialogue is a bit corny. This film isn't horrible just not brilliant.

I have adored Rex Smith since I was 9 yrs. old and i got my first glance at him at the play "Grease".
He seemed to have disappeared from the late 70's early 80's limelight, and did this terrible harlequin romance book on film in 1992. I haven't seen every single movie of his, but I am sure this has to be one of his worst film choices.
The only part I liked was him, his singing, and his moves. He is a very sexy sultry singer and he isn't a bad actor. When paired up with the "ballerina" his acting looks brilliant in comparision to her wooden performance.
I am on a quest to see as much of Rex's work as I can find, and well, this was one I won't watch again. It was terribly acted, and I am sure he wasn't in right mind when he chose this role.
It's a curiousity Rex piece at best ... Read More

As the story opens, lost-soul Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) has just arrived in Reno to get a quickie divorce. She meets Guido (Eli Wallach), a sensitive mechanic and his pal Gay (Clark Gable), an aging cowboy. Both men fall in love with her and she ends up living with Gay in Guido's house. The men take Roslyn out the desert to go "mustangin'," but she's horrified when she learns the purpose of their trip.

This story is about four aimless and rather pathetic people who have nothing to do and no place to do it in. They're just drifting through life and for a short time, they drift together. Gable is outstanding as the rugged old cowpoke who still wants a woman's touch. He takes manly command of every scene and is charisma personified. Wallach's role is less flashy but still powerful and ... Read More

VHS : Gilbert & Sullivan - The Pirates of Penzance / Kline, Ronstadt, Smith, Routledge, Delacorte Theater (Broadway Theatre Archive)
I bought this DVD because of my addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan, and "Pirates" in particular, but I hesitate to recommend it to someone encountering the opera for the first time (not that there are any other better options on the market, regrettably). It is full of energy and great fun but, as other reviewers have noted, the picture quality is often very poor, and, especially in the choruses, the sound is frequently "muddy". Kevin Kline and the other principals who went on to make the later "Pirates" film are all in good voice here (although I cannot understand why George Rose introduced the irritating nasal whine in "I am an orphan boy" here, which he later repeated in the film - there must be some subtle cultural reference that I am missing). Linda Ronstadt seems less secure in her singing than she ... Read More
