VHS : Sadat
Made less than two years after Sadat's assassination, the movie makes him out to be a saint. Sadat was no saint, he was a man and he had his faults like any other.

The movie compresses many events in Sadat's life. It appears that both prison sentences he served early in his life are portrayed as a single event. Also, his role in the pro-Nazi Free Officers is not discussed at all, nor would you know that Sadat was jailed while Britain and the Allies were fighting for their lives when Sadat started trying to undermine them.

Given the circumspect nature of the film many key events, formation of the United Arab Republic, Egyptian involvement in Yemen, the War of Attrition etc. are not discussed. However, the film does attempt to convey the byzantine nature of military ... Read More

Much more than a costume drama, very powerful movie! I was a teenager when Masada aired as a mini-series back in the early 1980s and bought the movie to show my teenage children who are now studying Roman history.

While some of the historical "facts" may be in question, the portrayal of 70 AD period Roman and Jewish life and politics is captured in fantastic detail and brought to life by a very fine collection of actors (O'Toole and Strauss). The cinematography and music score are just outstanding and really add to the dramatic feel of the movie.

Based on the excellent book, The Antagonists, the story covers deep issues that are still relevant today.

Highly recommended!

VHS : Whale For the Killing
Peter Strauss, normally a wonderful actor, let's his drama-queen persona move to the forefront as he cries to the dying whale to hold on and not give in. You almost wish he'd marry it and get it over with.
Over-acting aside, the movie is based on a superb book (of the same title) and STILL is a fine family movie (violent stupidity notwithstanding). I will give it 3 thumbs up.

VHS : The Big Dig - Boston
The actors draw you in to this great tale of an escapee from the nut house who loves nothing more then his air compressor and a jack hammer. Like "King of Hearts" in Jerusalem. Not since Charlie Chaplin has someone come along who says nothing yet digs into your soul with warmth as he goes to work in the middle of the city. You would think somebody would stop this mad man but the world doesn't always listen to the sane. Throw in romance and remove swearing and modern day crutches for poor movies and you a great treat for the whole family.

This movie, a much better adaptation then the garbage flick put out by Hollywood, "Rescue at Entebbe", is very true to the tactics, techniques, and training of a counter-terrorism unit. If you want slick action, smooth lines, excellent special effects, and brilliant camera work this movie is not for you. If you want the presentation of an actual event as supported by the participants, many of whom gave their advice and recollections to the making of this movie (one of whom is now the IDF Chief of Staff); complete with the impact on the families of those who went into harms way, then you will find this movie of great interest.
It boiled down to this: when Jews were held hostage and faced with death it was only the Jews (Israelis) who came to their rescue. The fact that when the doors were ... Read More
