that thinks that many of these acclaimed Foreign films, and especially, the Italian films ( I am Italian myself ) are dull and plodding??

They take the most small and trivial of situations and then labor through it for 2 hours.

In this case, IL POSTINO, my feeling is that it looked like it had to be chop edited to make a certain amount of running time. There were many jump points that bore inconsistency.

the lead girl couldn't be less interested in the main character, or men, in general, however, several scenes later , she is seductively rolling a plastic ball in her mouth.

The Aunt or matron or whatever she was, of the lead girl, is ready to shoot the suitor with a shotgun, but then, after he whisks her off for an elopement style marriage, ... Read More

Assuming you want horror/suspense, you could not have finer
ingredients. Great actors, author(s), cinematography, Venice
scenes, psychic phenomena. But, (besides a little too
much butt) the continuity just was'nt there in our opinion.
Lovely boats tho.

Maurizio Nichetti stars and directs this film. He is like a modern day Buster Keaton, and in this movie he plays a character who dubs cartoon sounds into Italian (sounds). His brother has the equally unnecessary job of dubbing porno movies into Italian. The movie is funny and comically erotic.

VHS : The Son's Room
Rarely has a film drawn me in so deeply that I remain affected days after I viewed it. "The Son's Room" is profound in its ability to create its moods especially in the latter half of the film. I feel that the director's presentation of this happy family, in the film's first half, is what allowed me to feel the result of an impending tragedy so personally. I kept thinking that I wanted everything to go back to the way it was before. I shared their grief as if it was my own.
I also applaud the presentation of an Italian society which is unlike the comic opera Italian experience presented in American films over the past decades going back to the silent era.
The film may not affect you as deeply as it affected me, but I highly recommend the absorbing story that is presented.

The work of Italian director Dario Argento may truly be an acquired taste. This tale of an American girl arriving at a European ballet academy and discovering its sinister secrets is interestingly executed but may leave viewers perplexed.

"Suspiria" carries a reputation of being a great horror film. It's not brilliant, really, but it's also not the worst thing on celluloid. I understand its importance as an international horror film. It's known for it's bizarre use of vivid colors and its over the top production design. Those are the most memorable things about this movie.

The best thing in this film is the first murder which occurs about ten minutes or so into the film. It's pretty sensational. But the film overall lacks a lot in substance and story. It's basically a stylish yet flimsy movie. For me ... Read More

VHS : The Icicle Thief

An incredibly inventive and inspired movie, it takes the idea of a movie-within-a-movie beyond anything I've ever seen before. A movie is being shown on Italian television that resembles very much DeSica's film THE BICYCLE THIEF. At its most poignant and emotional moments, however, it's interrupted by commercial breaks. Pretty soon the characters from the movie "leave" the film for the commercials, and vice-versa. The director (Maurizio Nichetti) enters the movie to try to get his script back to the way he intended it. The results of all this are wildly funny. Not only is the premise of the story extremely clever, but Nichetti pulls it off with technical felicity (going from b&w in the movie to color in the commercials) and some great acting from his principals. It's a wonderful treat of a film that will keep you smiling for ... Read More

This little movie is a jewel of a film. Jean Reno is at his absolute very
best as Marcello, a man driven by love to extreme measures. The rest of the cast is also superb. It is funny and bittersweet at the same time.
Everyone should see "For Roseanna" for a good video experience.
