VHS : Mary Poppins
I have numerous happy memories of seeing Mary Poppins since the first time (on its re-release in 1980). I go back to it time and again and have never been bored yet! Highlights - the horse race and the dancing cartoon waiter penguins; Chim Chim Chiree and the acrobatic chimney sweeps; Mrs Banks (Glynis Johns) and her 'Votes for Women'; Reginald Owen's Admiral (with a ship on the roof of his house!); the gorgeous 'Feed the Birds'; the special effects in 'A Spoonful of Sugar'; Ed Wynn as the giggling Uncle Albert; and of course the brilliant performances from Julie Andrews as Mary, Dick van Dyke as Bert/Mr Dawes senior, Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber as the children Jane and Michael, Hermoine Baddeley as the maid, and David Tomlinson as Mr Banks. Absolutely brilliant and definitely makes ... Read More

VHS : Canterville Ghost (1944)
I saw this black & white movie Canterville Ghost(1944) years ago. The cowardly ghost was funny. I was excited to find it on Amazon. The ghost tries to scare the guest instead they scare the cowardly ghost. Once again I enjoyed watching it but it wasn't as funny as I remembered. I also purchased the newer version in color of Canterville Ghost(1986)staring John Gielgud, Ted Wass, Andrea Marcovicci, and Alyssa Milano. This Canterville ghost wants the new owners out and is very mischief. We enjoyed both movies.

VHS : Secret Garden
I love this movie!Since I was around 5 or 6 years old, this film has been one of my favorites. The original book is a timeless classic for all ages.Out of all the film adaptations, this one is tied with the Hallmark one as my favorite. It perfectly recreates the eerie feel of the manor and the moors it is built upon. The black and white appearance of the film are made for this type of piece. Also, when the film switches to technicolor for the garden scenes, the effect is stunning. It makes for a seamless transition from the somber outside world into the pleasant magic of the garden. In addition to this, the acting is wonderful.Margaret O'Brien is the ideal choice to play Mary Lennox. She manages to make the transition from nasty child to nice child seem real and convincing. She is also very likable in the ... We very much enjoyed this movie. Gregory Peck is a strong actor in this movie, as he was in his other movies. It follows the family business via the one adult child in the family actively involved. Highly recommend.

My husband and I had been looking for this movie for quite some time and couldn't believe that we actually found this on Amazon.com. We were so excited and couldn't wait to share this with our entire family. Our grandchildren thought this was just absolutely awesome.

VHS : I Married an Angel
The films of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald have always held a special
place in my heart, cause they usually point to love and music. Films that
have affected audiences for a long time. They also made people feel better
in the dark days of war.
And today, they still make us feel good. There's a magical chemistry
when they are together. This only lasted 8 films, and Married to a
Angel was their last one. Saw it as a kid, and even today i still love
this film. Dont try to disect the movie, just sit down and enjoy.
And in the end, if it leaves a smile on your face, Nelson and Jeanette
succeeded in their work.

VHS : Darby's Rangers
The hardest part of writing a review for this movie was selecting a myriad of titles that filled my imagination: "Fell on its Own Plunger," or "Navy Recruiting Film," or "Pull the Pin on this One and Release the Charging Handle, " or "Weapons Free at the Movie Marquee."

Although I have a great memory for the good things, I also have one for those which are bad, and this is bad. It's bad enough to make John Wayne's "The Green Berets" look like a Cannes Festival Film Classic, and this ranks as the worst military movie I have ever seen, being right down there with "The Blue Max."

It is 1942 and Colonel Darby played by James Garner is marked as a "comer" in the army. That was the term of the day for someone who was destined for the stars, at least on his epaulettes. Darby wants to form an elite commando ... Read More

VHS : Green Dolphin Street
"Green Dolphin Street" is one of those cheesefests of Hollywood's Golden Age that has slipped into obscurity. At least "Black Narcissus",the camp classic, has its own Criterion Edition. Why NOT the love triangle set in New Zealand, with its needlessly complicated plot and Lana Turner in her fantastical outfits?

"Green Dolphin Street" is all about two sisters who live on the Channel Islands between England and France. There's the good girl, Marguerite (Donna Reed), and the bad grrrrl Marianne (Lana Turner). They're both enamored of the dull William (Richard Hart) William sets off to China as a trader. After a drunken night, he dashes off a letter to his intended... but he writes "Marianne" instead of "Marguerite." Friends don't let friends drink and write. William realizes his mistake too late. Marianne is brash, bossy, ... Read More
