VHS : Dark Command (Colorized)
After Wayne hit the jackpot in John Ford's groundbreaking Western STAGECOACH (1939) he was quickly reunited with his co-star Claire Trevor in ALLEGHENY UPRISING (1939) and again here in the DARK COMMAND (1940). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the man who incidentally gave young Michael Morrison his first starring role as a very young "John Wayne" in THE BIG TRAIL (1929) but it was a box office failure and Wayne was relegated to mainly B-Westerns until rescued by John Ford.

The fact based story is from the period starting just before the outbreak of the American Civil War depicting growing tensions on the Kansas Missouri border leading up to the infamous William Quantrill and his guerrillas burning down the town of Laurence, Kansas on August 21 1863. Based on the novel by W R Burnett Will ... Read More

I bought this for my father who loves classics. The tape was a bit staticky and it was clear it was an old tape, but still a good movie.

VHS : The Cheaters (The Castaway)
This was one of those movies that played around Christmas time faithfully about 30 years ago, along with "Christmas in Connecticut", "The Bishop's Wife" and the 1930's American version of "A Christmas Carol". Unfortunately, it got lost and I am thrilled to see it on VHS, if not DVD! It's the story of a spoiled rich family headed by the sweet, if ineffectual, Billie Burke as the mother and the blustering, if ineffectual, Eugene Pallette as the father. Their eldest daughter brings home a homeless man, the wonderful Joseph Schildkraut, for all the wrong reasons. Their frenetic, shallow lives play out in front of him as he eventually teaches them the true meaning of the holidays and family while learning a little from them, too. I love that the daughter brings him home strictly to aggravate and challenge ... Read More

I can't really add much except to say that not only is this one of the black & white films that really holds up, but Rosalind Russell is very powerful and so convincing in the role that I cried! Interesting to compare to the later Joan Crawford vehicle. Joan was great too but hers was a wonderfully angry interpretation. Russell's is way more nuanced so that the very ending is really touching. I'm a huge Joan Crawford fan but if I had to say which was better...well, Joan's is really good but Russell's is awsome. Also, as a screenplay the Russell version is much more textured and worldly. Joan's version much more insuler.

5.State of the Union starring: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Van Johnson, Angela Lansbury, Adolphe Menjou

Not my favorite Capra movie OR Tracy and Hepburn movie, but well worth watching because of the wonderful pairing of actors and director! Tracy and Hepburn are a magical pair no matter what movie they are in, and Frank Capra always has a happy ending even for difficult situations. This movie almost seems like a role reversal to Tracy and Hepburn's movie "Woman of the Year". Angela Lansbury did a wonderful job in the movie also.

VHS : Thin Ice
After One in a Million 1936, Sonja Henie was fast becoming a Hollywood star in the front rank. In THIN ICE she is teamed with her then-boyfriend Tyrone Power and the chemistry is explosive... It`s a Cinderella-story, but given the full treatment by 20th Century-Fox - it`s almost like an MGM extravaganza :-)

The skating is good and Joan Davis as a comedy relief is a winner. As a matter of fact I can`t understand the fuzz they make about the Astaire&Rogers musicals over at RKO... I much more prefer the Sonja Henie`s at 20th Century-Fox... They are never OVERLONG and never outstays their welcome:-)

The affair with Power never ended in marriage; he was bisexual and Sonja found out... When he married French Annabella she was reportedly deeply hurt though they remained friends up until Power died of a heart ... Read More

VHS : Hail the Conquering Hero

Top-notch Preston Sturges comedy about patriotism and small-town politics. Eddie Bracken plays the son of a WW I marine hero who has joined up for WW II with high hopes for glory, only to be discharged for hay fever. Embarrassed to go home to his mother and sweetheart (Ella Rains), he meets six marines in a bar one night (led by William Demerest) and before he knows what hit him, he's on his way home a decorated war hero (thanks to the snow job concocted by Demerest). The town goes ga-ga and ends up electing him mayor. He finally straightens things out at the end, but in the meantime we are treated to some of the best Sturges exploding humor on screen. The entire Sturges stock company is on hand, and especially good are Raymond Walburn as the windbag mayor Bracken defeats, Freddie Steele as a mother-loving marine, and, ... Read More

"Key to the City," with Clark Gable and Loretta Young is a wonderful and delightful film. It is the story of two Mayor's one played by Clark, Mayor Finch from California and Mayor Standdish from Maine, played wonderfully by Loretta. The two fall in love in th epolitical world, and find out even though they are total opposites in tastes and personalities, they were made for each other. A great romantic, and entertaining film. I highly recomend it. It has a great story-line. It is very entertaining.

First I've been obsessed with this film since the first time I saw it convulsing, and I mean convulsing with laughter. It's not funny all the way through but when it is funny it's FUNNY!

Second, from a historical perspective it's very interesting. The first 15 minutes is a recycled silent film, which transitions to Mr. Lloyds first talkie. So it bridges the era's.

Third how can you not see a film involving BOTH Sturges AND Lloyd? Not to mention the cream of the crop of supporting character actors. Conlin was never better, he's a great guy but you don't want to trust him one inch! The plot line is so inventive and outrageous you'll never ever guess what is coming next!

Fourth, like all Lloyd and most of Sturges this is a film with it's morals completely out for the average guy. The guy with the good heart. The ... Read More
