I first saw this series while living in Japan as a child. Ever since, I dreamed of living on a ranch. I loved the book also, which I read after watching the series. I'll always remember the Crown V fondly, especially now that I've married into a cattle ranching family. :)

This is an excellent series for children over the age 10. There's enough adventure for all ages. The characters through the decades resonate throughout the whole series. It makes me want to read the book again.

VHS : A Place in the Sun
Charlie Chaplin called George Steven's 1951 A Place In the Sun the greatest American movie he had ever seen. The passing of fifty seven years has dulled this comment somewhat but it is still an amazing film experience. The film based loosely on Theodore Dreiser's American Tragedy transports Dreiser's story to 1950's America and confronts the problems faced by returning veterans as they try to move up in a stratified society.

There are great performances by Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters as the principals caught in a love triangle that eventually leads to murder. The film is less an indictment against American capitalism than it is a love story and on the whole the editing that Steven's two screen writers (Michael Wilson and Harry Brown) did to the source ... This is a wonderful film, superbly written and very well acted. It gives an idea of what it may have been like for the leaders of the early church, including the politics involved. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Raw Deal
This hard-as-nails potboiler was made for pennies at a Poverty Row studio by Mann and his legendary cinematographer, John Alton. Like the very best films in this genre, there's plenty of raw dialogue, heart-fluttering suspense, and a square-jawed tough guy who isn't afraid to blast away at his nemeses. But the sizzling love triangle that develops between Joe, Pat, and Ann is a perversely clever plot twist that contributes much to the fatalistic tone, with Trevor's cold-hearted voiceover to top it all off. Burr's turn as the brutal Coyle (watch out for that fruit flambeé!) is especially nasty. If you're in the market for a visceral thriller, put your money on "Raw Deal."

Why this fine film has been overlooked for more than fifty years is beyond me.
Frank Sinatra's performance as the obnoxious little vocalist who comes good at the end is a standout and his songs remain evergreen.
If ever a film needed to be looked at anew this is the one.
Release it on DVD. Now!

"Key to the City," with Clark Gable and Loretta Young is a wonderful and delightful film. It is the story of two Mayor's one played by Clark, Mayor Finch from California and Mayor Standdish from Maine, played wonderfully by Loretta. The two fall in love in th epolitical world, and find out even though they are total opposites in tastes and personalities, they were made for each other. A great romantic, and entertaining film. I highly recomend it. It has a great story-line. It is very entertaining.

Now here is a serious noir film! The cast features Dick Powell, Jane Wyatt, Raymond Burr and Lizabeth Scott. Powell is an L.A. insurance man, slowly becoming bored with his predictable suburban lifestyle. His wife is Jane Wyatt, the perfect 40s/50s homemaker. Trouble brews when Powell hires a smarmy P.I. (Burr) to investigate a theft of property. This is long before his role of Perry Mason. Burr gets the perpetrator (Byron Barr) arrested. Powell visits Barr s girlfriend to wrap things up and reclaim the remaining goods. But this is no ordinary lady! This is the classic noir good girl/bad girl-Lizabeth Scott. The two have the requisite noir affair, even though Barr is her supposed boyfriend! The plot thickener is that P.I. Burr also is interested in Scott, leaving the 3 male leads pining for the same girl! The ... Read More

This was a good movie but the directing in this movie was poorly done. There were some strong preformances from Dane Clark and Andy Devine. The storyline was simple. An army officer (Clark)forces settlers to move foward because of rumored indian attack.Dorothy Patrick,John Carradine, and Raymond Burr co-star in this old western flick.

Bob Hope's movies are always witty and fun -- this is one of the minor efforts but well worth the pleasure from the classic age of movie comedies. Very good DVD from a fine seller rates AAA++++.

Ray Milland not only starred in this movie but made his debut in the director's chair with it .He plays a noted gunman ,Wes Steele,a man unjustly accused of murder when he witnesses a robbery and killing in the local bank .The robbery and murder are the work of Raymond Burr and other outwardly respectable businessmen who are using their position as a front for criminal activity .He escapes and takes refuge in the basement of a nearby house which just happens to belong to the town sheriff (Ward Bond)a man in league with the killers
He enlists the aid of the sheriff's daughter (Mary Murphy) and the two set out to prove his innocence of the crime even though this means implicating her own father

I have called this a slightly bleak Western .I say this because the sharp script by John Tucker Battlle includes ... Read More
