VHS : The Uninvited
One of the things which makes this film so remarkable is the script, as other reviewers have noted. Perhaps the humour and pacing might be better understood if it were realised that Dodie Smith scripted the movie -- the writer to I Capture the Castle and The 101 Dalmatians. She was living in the States at the time to escape the bombing of England during WW2, and this was one of her projects. An amazing script, performed brilliantly by the likes of Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and the radiant (and ultimately fatally flawed) Gail Russell. And the music by Victor Young, Stella By Starlight, is incredibly evocative. A truly "must-see" film.

VHS : Dial M for Murder
Alfred Hitchcock had already begun work on Rear Window when he took on the project to direct Dial M for Murder, based on the successful play by Frederick Knott. For the film, Hitchcock chose to cast his favorite leading lady of the time, Grace Kelly, as the embattled Margot Wendice. Kelly would also star in Rear Window and Hitchcock's subsequent To Catch a Thief. It wasn't Hitchcock's preference to shoot Dial M for Murder in Warnercolor 3D (the cameras were large), and the film is seldom screened in 3D, but Hitchcock's use of the technique is notable for its service to the story rather than just being a gimmick. In the film Margot Wendice is a wealthy heiress whose playboy husband, Tony (Ray Milland), recognizes his dependence on his wife's fortune. When Tony begins to suspect he is losing ... Read More

This is an action-filled movie that gains momentum when the three brothers leave their family and join the French Foreign Legion together in a wave of disgust over their father's weaknesses. The brotherly affection and loyalty is the main theme of the story, and it is touching and heartrending without being overly sentimental. Cooper, Milland, Hayward and Donleavy are brilliant. It was, is, and always will be a great film about true nobility of the heart as opposed to nobility of the blood.

VHS : Ministry of Fear
Fritz Lang was one of the greatest directing talents to ever emerge from German cinema. Born in Vienna, he migrated to Berlin following service in World War One and became one of Germany's premier directors.

When Hitler came to power, however, Lang found himself at a potentially deadly crossroad. He was summoned by Joseph Goebbels, the Third Reich's infamous Director of Propaganda, and was offered the position of becoming the regime's head of filmmaking.

The sagacious director knew a trap when he saw it. He was aware that the Nazi regime was aware of his opposition to everything it stood for as well as one other important fact. While Lang was a practicing Catholic, his mother was Jewish, a fact of which Goebbels and Hitler were surely aware.

Lang believed that his ... Read More

6.Golden Earrings starring: Ray Milland, Marlene Dietrich, Murvyn Vye, Bruce Lester, Dennis Hoey
directed by: Mitchell Leisen

VHS : Golden Earrings
Marlene Dietrich plays the gypsy Lydia, and in her raggedy clothes, black wig, and dark makeup, gives a whole other take on what sexy is all about. (Her gorgeous legs and bare feet get plenty of look-see throughout the picture.) Set near the beginning of WW II in the Black Forest of Germany, Dietrich helps Ray Milland escape the Nazis and obtain a secret poison gas formula. The plot is a bit thin, but both Milland and especially Dietrich put everything into their roles. The golden earrings are a prop used to help disguise Milland, and when he receives them in a box in London after the war, he knows they come from Dietrich who is waiting for him. It's during his flight back to Germany that he relates the story in flashback. Sure enough, after hiking to the spot he had last left her, years before, Dietrich is waiting ... Read More

The is an amazing movie in that it takes a subject that is problematic for our nation, and somehow synthesizes its complexities it into a powerful, moving film that shows how the belief of one person can be the catalyst of hope for one whose life is drowning in substance abuse.

8.Easy Living starring: Jean Arthur, Edward Arnold, Ray Milland, Luis Alberni, Mary Nash

VHS : Easy Living
This is a great little film that shows how clever and funny some of the old 39's and 40's movies can be. With a cast of actors that frequented movies by classy directors like Capra and Sturges, the movie has all the pieces to make a successful romp.

This is definitely slapstick, and if you get squeamish with scenes of total destruction, there will be a time or two when you will want to close your eyes! However, I am not a fan of that type of destruction, and I thought the movie was terrific. Jean Arthur is quite adorable and endearing in most of what she does, and I would have to say she lives up to that in "Easy Living" as well. Her character comes across as sincere and believable, and this allows her "antics" to succeed.

Ray Milland and Edward Arnold are also very good. They don't necessarily have momentous ... Read More

A must see if you are a baseball fan or a fan of comedy and wonderful endings. The only thing that would make it better is if it were on DVD.

Made in more innocent times, they just can't make movies like this anymore. The story is a lot of fun and Ginger Rogers is in top form, even though she doesn't dance much. It's a great showcase for her acting ability - not to mention the drool worthy Ray Milland.
