VHS : Great Expectations
This is the best version of Great Expectations in film, I gave it a star because it's in VHS. I have no idea why they didn't come out on DVD.

Well...if any of you are waiting for DVD or planning to buy this VHS, think again. This film actually came out in DVD at UK so look somewhere else.

Interesting and easy read - Fox has done his research well. My late husband's parents were Kenya settlers and his father had NO respect for the Happy Valley crowd AT ALL. Fox has certainly filled in many of the gaps left in the story my husband, Len Gill told me and has introduced me to a new side of some of the characters Len knew. I only wish I had read this book before my husband died of cancer. So many questions - so little time for answers.

A film that comes from so far away 22 years ago that the story, or the history, of the film is no longer important, but was it important even in 1986? Today the struggle between the two Christian kings of Portugal and of Spain on one hand, though hostile to each other when the other party is absent, and the church on the other hand, a church that is also divided between the European hierarchy that only sees the survival they have to go through in Europe by defending there their interests by sacrificing a few missions in South America. Today these details are irrelevant The Christian church or churches have long abandoned this kind of policy, particularly the Catholic church. But today the general pattern of the story, the massacre, the slaughter, the slaying of a whole Indian, local population to the ... Read More

I have seen this on TV, but I didn't give this five stars as I haven't watched the dvd yet and don't know if the dvd is of good quality. The movie, however, is excellent and deserves five plus stars. Daniel Day Lewis gives an awesome performance, as always. Very moving film.

While this is a reasonably enjoyable bit of spy vs. spy escapism, the quality of this rental download is pathetic. I rented this film to watch on my laptop during a recent airline trip and frankly, I was a bit shocked. It's quite obviously been transferred from a twenty year old edited for TV analog video tape complete with choppy breaks for commercials and awful audio and video quality.

Amazon should really be embarrassed to offer (let alone charge money for) this version. This is certainly not what customers expect when they rent or purchase an Unbox Video. (Thankfully, it's the exception and not the rule)

6.Cal starring: Helen Mirren, John Lynch, Donal McCann, John Kavanagh, Ray McAnally
directed by: Pat O'Connor

This is one of the saddest, most beautiful movies I've ever seen. John Lynch and Helen Mirren give radiant performances and bring human faces to the struggle that is no-win for everyone. The members of the IRA are shown at once as monsters and victims and neither ever becomes the dominant way to view those who carry on the violence. Mark Knopfler wrote the soundtrack -- it only adds to the poignancy of the film. You can't miss w/ this one.

The film focuses too much on a miscast, cadaverous Gary Cooper. Deborah Kerr's character is interesting, but she looks bored throughout most of the film. Eric Portman is delightfully evil and sinister. You will never view bathtubs or razors the same way after the finale!

8.Billy Budd starring: Victor Brooks, Robert Brown, Melvyn Douglas, Thomas Heathcote, Barry Keegan

This is Terence Stamp's best performance, and one of his earliest. This is one of those rare movies that stands the test of time. It is well written, directed, acted, etc.

Billy Budd, along with Mutiny On The Bounty, are the two most authentic movies ever produced that takes place primarily on a ship. If you have not seen this movie, you will be amazed at the quality of this production.

9.Sicilian starring: Christopher Lambert, Terence Stamp, Joss Ackland, John Turturro, Richard Bauer

No joke, this is two hours of amateurish stuff, which cannot really be called cinema without upsetting someone up there.
I just went back to see some of the scenes of this movie again because they are so ridiculous I wanted to have another go!

So, let's start in the right order (warning, contains some spoilers, but you're not really going to watch this movie, are you?):

- The fact that the movie was entirely in English should have given it away, very funny to hear would-be sicilians talking to each other in English.

- Past that, we encounter the limping professor. An attempt to add a sinister touch to an otherwise meaningless character. Very amateurish.

- Then came signs and inscriptions throughout the movie, all in English (things like Sicilian Region, Minister of ... Read More

Our whole family just loved this video, it is simple and sweet, with no bad language, or bad taste. We were all enraptured by the lovable young pollyanna and her innocent adventures. Even our four year old has watched the entire video over and over again. We recommend it very highly.
