VHS : Go West Young Man
Marvis Arden (Mae West) is a sensational movie star. Her following spans the world and her personal appearance tours prove her popularity. On her way home from one such appearance, Arden's car breaks down. She orders her publicity man (Warren William) to find her a place to stay, suspicious that he planned the break down to keep her away from a man. However, she soon finds herself mooning over an attractive repairman in town (Randolph Scott) and listening to his ideas about inventing equipment for film.

West is wonderful as always in this breezy and enjoyable movie. She has many snappy quips, especially brilliant since she wrote the script herself. It is always exciting to see Hollywood parodying itself and its stars. The visual elements are quite good, especially the opener. The story ... Read More

VHS : Roberta (1935)
As others have noted, the negative criticism of this excellent film is both uninformed and off-point. Randolph Scott is "wooden" because he's playing a former football player, contrasting with the irrepressible vitality of Astaire & Rogers, and the awesome talents of Irene Dunne, which must have taken some effort for Scott, who could be quite unreserved off-camera. It's also a film full of interesting historical perspectives, from emigre Russian aristocrats in Paris, to Astaire's aspersions against the outfits he's supposed to be selling in the fashion show, itself a staple of films of that time and after, e.g., "The Women" and "How To Marry A Millionaire." Yes, the dancing doesn't occupy quite as much time as it does in other Astaire-Rogers films, but with Dunne and Scott on the set, who cares? And then ... Read More

Hilariously funny! I never tire of this movie and have seen it a record 32 times to date. The plot reeks of the worst case scenario with regards to marital infidelity, of the absolutely incomprehensible kind and situation.. A must see, or pick up for the collection of classic comedy movies. Tears of laughter friends, tears of laughter.

9.The Professional starring: Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman, Danny Aiello, Peter Appel
directed by: Luc Besson
November 07, 1995

VHS : The Professional
Jean Reno as "The Professional" brings to film a killer version of a man who is hesitant about life and rigid about relationships. That the movie comes under the guise of a hitman, or cleaner as Leon calls himself, is merely the dressing for the real story--the relationship between Leon and Matilda.

Matilda is the 12-year-old daughter of a scumbag, small-time drug dealer, who has little control of himself, eases his frustrations through his hot wife and against his young daughter, Matilda. She is supposed to be in boarding school and out of the way when a DEA officer comes for his cocaine or retribution. Gary Oldman is the agent with his staff of crooked cops and dope dealers. Matilda escapes murder when her neighbor, Leon, takes her in.

Natalie Portman as Matilda is pubescent and childishly provocative in ... Read More

Universal's success with such films as DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN prompted other studios to jump on the horror-genre bandwagon, and among the results was MURDERS IN THE ZOO, released in 1933 by Paramount. In many respects it is quite a fine film: the story is clever, the production values are quite fine, and the cast is unexpectedly memorable.

The story concerns big game hunter Eric Gorman (Lionell Atwill), who prefers to bring 'em back alive for exhibition, and opens in the wild--where Gorman is seen sewing shut a man's mouth because the man dared attempt to kiss his Gorman's wife Evelyn (Kathleen Brooke.) Upon their return to the United States, the terrified Evelyn determines to leave Gorman for handsome Roger Hewitt (John Lodge), but Gorman puts two and two together and comes up with murder.

Lionel Atwill was ... Read More
