This is a great DVD with the extra scenes in it bringing the book more fully to life Don't get me wrong I adored the original but this is better. I think the music is fine and not at all distracting. Highly recommended.

VHS : Karate Kid
It's a little surprising to realize that "The Karate Kid" is now 24 years old. Made in 1984, it still holds its own in 2008. In fact, it's a LOT better than many of the movies being churned out today.

Why? For me, it's simply the excellent acting. Somehow, the chemistry between "Daniel-san" and "Mister Miyagi" is excellent, and memorable. Without this, the movie would have been forgotten decades ago.

"Daniel's" mother also does an excellent job, deftly managing to portray a total airhead without so much as a hint that anything is wrong. (What DID happen to Daniel's father, anyway?)

To my mind (and time will tell) this re-make of "Rocky" is, oddly enough, a lot better than the original! That doesn't happen very often!

A very high recommendation, ... Read More

VHS : The Karate Kid Part III
Karate Kid III has gotten a lot of play time on cable TV, which is where I first saw it. Not nearly as beloved as the previous two installments for a variety of reasons it's generally panned as being cartoonishly acted and using the same basic formula as it's predecessors. Ralph Macchio returns as the getting older but seldom wiser Daniel while Pat Morita resumes the role of the sagely guiding force of Mr. Miyagi.

First off, despite my 3 star rating, I actually *did* enjoy this movie. There are parts in the movie that really shine and then others that are slogged down by what can only be described as the result of over the top acting and in may ways a really weak script. It's a pretty simple plot that can be described in a single paragraph.

Daniel and Mr. Miyagi return from Okinawa ... Read More

VHS : The Karate Kid Part II
Following Daniel-San's (Macchio) triumphant, albeit incredibly improbable, victory at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, there is little time to celebrate. Mr. Miyagi (Morita) gets a letter from Okinawa informing him that his father is dying. He knows this is a potentially deadly situation because of an old grudge with his former best friend Sato. Nonetheless, Miyagi let's the recently dumped Daniel-San (it was only a matter of time before Elisabeth Shue realized she was dating a sissy) come along for the trip.

Upon arriving in Okinawa, Miyagi soon realizes that he has very little time. Not only will his father die very soon, but his former best friend Sato - who incidentally has a watermelon for a head - wants to fight him to the death. It turns out that Miyagi left his homeland eons ago ... Read More

I was an extra in this movie, so I cannot give a truly unbiased review of it, but it was loads of fun to participate in. Arthur Hiller was a wonderful guy, and so were all the actors. It was like a big vaguely organized circus....in other words, a great experience...Looking forward to seeing my school friends on DVD again.

VHS : Crossroads
"Crossroads" takes elements from the history and mythology of legendary Mississippi blues man Robert Johnson and assembles them into a modern fable that is well-paced, well-acted, and very entertaining, with plenty of excellent music along the way. Joe Seneca is great as an old blues harp player stuck in a New York nursing home for convicted felons. Rediscovered by a young classical guitar prodigy obsessed with the blues, the old man sees an opportunity for redemption and siezes the chance, resulting in an adventure that changes both characters as they travel south toward their destiny. The dialogue can be a little ham-fisted and cliched at times, but most of it goes down easy. Many critics thought the casting of Ralph Macchio as the young guitar player was a disaster, but I have to disagree. Macchio is not a horrible actor, ... Read More

Speaking as a disabled vietnam vet with PTSD, I could identify 100% with Lithgow's character. A lot of this acting was wooden...but, that's how some of us are...wooden.

I think this movie leaves with more questions asked than answered. Some of this stuff was typical Hollywood cr*p. But, enough of it rang close to home. Not every namvet goes tripwire. Some integrate totally back into society. Some rejoin partially. Some not at all. This injury affects different people different ways. There is no blanket statement that tell you what it is...and what it is not. Each and every veteran no matter what war is affected by it some way. Directly or guilt by association, we all get tarred with the same brush.

For my generation of Vets, that war will never be over. But,I promise you one thing, I will do ... Read More
