1.Pretty Woman starring: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Hank Azaria, Judith Baldwin, Ralph Bellamy

VHS : Pretty Woman
One of those movies you watch every time it comes on television because it's so cute, yet one of those movies you're almost ashamed to adore because it has almost no redemptive features; `Pretty Woman' has become an instant classic for almost no reasons at all. Sure, it's cute, but so aren't a lot more respectable films.

Oh yeah, I forgot; Julia Roberts is amazing here.

So, that answers all questions doesn't it? Why do we love this movie? We love it because it gave us Julia, our beloved Julia. She is charming and warm and heartbreaking and moving and memorable and sincere and we just want to eat her up in every scene. The problem with `Pretty Woman' is that when you take Roberts' magnetism out of the equation you have a rather empty film that relies on clichés ... Read More

VHS : Sunrise at Campobello
Ralph Bellamy and (to a lesser degree) Greer Garson won plaudits for the amazing way they sunk themselves into their roles as FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt; and Hume Cronyn is also very good, but for sheer professionalism acting honors go to Jean Hagen for her no-nonsense take as FDR's private secretary and aide-du-chambre Missy Le Hand. I wonder what Eleanor thought of this portrayal by Hagen of her hated rival, Missy, with whom FDR became romantically involved (though this isn't touched on in the film)? Hagen was one of many 50s actresses who always seemed to get the bad breaks. She was fantastically funny as Lina Lamont in the classic SINGIN IN THE RAIN, and determinedly pathetic in THE ASPHALT JUNGLE and THE BIG KNIFE, but true stardom always seems to elude her. Perhaps her talent was too mercurial ... Read More

I love this movie. I have been trying for years to fine it on DVD to add to my collection. I hope it will soon be on a DVD format I can use. Everything else finds it way to DVD. What a shame this has not.

4.Wolf Man (1941) starring: Claude Rains, Warren William, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Bela Lugosi

VHS : Wolf Man (1941)
Ok, this is another Universal monster movie, but an excellent one! The money spent on this production was pretty hefty. Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Lon Chaney Jr. and others. Wow! Poor Lon Chaney Jr. loves a girl but gets attacked by a wolf. Poor guy, he ends up having some really sleepless nights when a full moon appears. What to do? Maybe Bela Legosi as a gypsy can help? Or that lady gypsy, does she know anything?

VHS : Awful Truth
I love most 30's screwball comedies and I adore Cary Grant, but this one didn't do anything for me. There are some genuinely funny moments, notably the performance of Dixie Lee, the nightclub singer and the dog, Mr. Smith is terrific...but mostly I found it much less sparkly and snappy than most of this genre.

Grant is always wonderful...a true Movie Star of his time....incredibly handsome, very funny, warm and always interesting. His facial expressions when Dixie Lee performs are almost worth watching the whole film. I don't much get Irene Dunn, but I guess she was popular at the time. All of the supporting cast are predictable but entertaining. If these folks had had a better script the film would have been really good, and perhaps, for the time, it was great.

For now, it's good for ... Read More

VHS : Court Martial of Billy Mitchell
An entertaining and well-made film with good acting especially Rod Steiger's performance. The ARTISAN DVD is below average; the 2.35:1 CinemaScope is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, the color is just OK, the picture is not quite sharp, and there is some background noise.

7.The Professionals starring: Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode, Jack Palance

VHS : The Professionals
Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Woody Strode make this flick great. Hired by a train baron to bring back his kidnapped wife, they soon find that all is not what it seems. The acting is terse and intense and, for all the twists and turns, you're still left wondering what happens next when the movie ends. Not a lot of gunfights and explosions, although there's enough to satisfy. Instead, it's the mental game of cat and mouse that takes the forefront here and delivers pretty good.

8.Cancel My Reservation starring: Bob Hope, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Bellamy, Forrest Tucker, Anne Archer

VHS : Cancel My Reservation
In his final film (not counting two later cameos), Bob Hope stars as a TV talk show host on vacation who gets mixed up in murder and mayhem.
First of all, it should be noted this was his first film since 1969's dismal HOW TO COMMIT MARRIAGE, and was no great improvement. Hope's films had been suffering badly since the mid 60's: his delivery became increasingly wooden, the writing was getting sub-par, and worst of all, Phyllis Diller became his frequent partner in cinema crime.
She's not here in CANCEL, fortunately, but the film still suffers from an uneven plot and writing that awkwardly wavers from comic to dramatic, with Hope seeming ill at ease in both.
CANCEL does benefit from a decent supporting cast, with Eva Marie Saint as his discontent wife, Forrest Tucker and Ralph Bellamy as the bad guys, and ... Read More

9.Brother Orchid starring: Edward G. Robinson, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sothern, Donald Crisp, Ralph Bellamy

VHS : Brother Orchid
Edward G. Robinson is somewhat cast against type in this film. It has been years since I have seen this movie; it's never been one that has received much exposure via television. It's a real treat to see Robinson take a turn at comedy; something he didn't do often but he had the skills to do it. Brother Orchid was released in 1940 & was directed by Lloyd Bacon. It's presented in the full screen format (1.33:1) & is in black & white.

Little John Sarto (Edward G. Robinson) has had enough of the rackets after someone in his Protection Agency has knocked someone off. He decides to retire, go to Europe & get some real class. After five years & broke (he's made some incredibly bad investments), he decides to return to New York City & become the head of his Protection Agency again. His former pals ... Read More

I've always enjoyed this film but never got around to buying it until now. George Burns' performance is excellent - humorous but with a point.
