1.Fawlty Towers - The Complete Collection starring: John Cleese, Prunella Scales

VHS : Fawlty Towers - The Complete Collection
Like all the Monty Python alumni, John Cleese is talented and funny. From Monty Python (of course) to A Fish Called Wanda, Cleese always just makes me laugh.

And it is not different in Fawlty Towers, where he is at his acerbic and crazy best as the owner of a hotel where circumstances always leads to laughs, and Cleese is surrounded with other actos who do a great job.

Echos of Monty Pythin are here, plus other elements thrown in, so if you are a Python or Cleese Fan you will find the series hilarious. British style humor that works well for all and the extras do add to the set which makes it a wothwhile DVD set to have in your collection since the episodes, like all good comedy, can be watched more than once and still be worth it.

I think, to a certain degree, comparison with Douglas McGrath's 1996 movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow is inevitable. However, I must alert my reader to the fact that - when I praise this alternate version from Diarmuid Lawrence - I do so with the original novel in mind. This mini-series has not a movie's glamour, nor does Kate Beckinsale match Paltrow in beauty. However, with regards to Jane Austen's beloved work, this is undoubtedly the more faithful adaptation. Beckinsale's portrayal is less flighty and silly then Paltrow's... she carries the character's grace perfectly in every scene. The superb Samantha Morton, despite her slimness, is a perfect Harriet Smith; it is hard to make so stupid a girl endearing, but Morton does it with such apparent ease even her must enthusiastic fans must believe what ... VHS : Freddie the Frog
I remember seeing this movie when I was very young, and while it's not the best animated film I've ever seen, it's certainly not the worst. The animation is satisfactory, and Freddie IS rather handsome and charming for a frog. Everyone has their own opinion about this film, of course, but maybe you negative critics out there are being just a wee bit too harsh. There are movies out there that are far worse than this one, you know.

4.A Question of Attribution starring: James Fox, David Calder, Geoffrey Palmer, Prunella Scales, Ann Beach

Sir Anthony Blunt was one of the real-life spies of the Cambridge ring. The main spy, Philby, an important man in British intelligence, had found refuge in the URSS in 1963. Blunt was only found out by the public in 1977. In the movie, he is shown at the peak of his glory: he was in charge of the Queen's paintings when is treason became public knowledge. James Fox([The Remains of the Day (Special Edition)) gives a powerful image of Blunt, caught in the limelight. The director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy (Two Disc Collector's Edition)) plays on comparisons between the nature of fraud (treason vs fake paintings) and the nature of cancer (Blunt is dying from a cancer which is found out while he is found out as a traitor). The movie is both artistic(with alternance of strongly symbolic images) and spellbounding. ... Read More

VHS : Hobson's Choice
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he plans to keep it that way. Maggie runs the store, keeps the ... Read More

VHS : Breaking the Code
There are probably only a handful of actors alive as good as Derek Jacobi; this account of Alan Turing's life and disgrace in the eyes of the British secret service demonstrates why he's so good. The empathy and outrage the viewer feels on behalf of the embattled mathmetician finds its equal in the awe for his intellect that the solution of the enigma ciphers merits. Much like Prick Up Your Ears, this film shows up societal prejudice and how damaging it can be in the face of true creative genius.

VHS : Howard's End
A magnificently told tale of sin, forgiveness, redemption, and the settling of accounts

Though slow-moving throughout (my only complaint against this film, and a minor one at that), HOWARD'S END is many things: a costume drama, a period piece, a film with some of the best acting you could ever hope to find, and at times, a comedy of errors with some very unique and unpredictable plot twists. The story revolves around two families -- the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes -- and a marriage which almost connects them, a close friendship that does, a failed bequest, a sin which comes back to haunt, another marriage, and a murder.

I must confess I have not read the book, though I now want to. Many years ago, I watched THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, another popular Merchant-Ivory film (also starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson) ... Read More

10.Wicked Lady starring: Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates, John Gielgud, Denholm Elliott, Prunella Scales
directed by: Michael Winner
December 02, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Wicked Lady
Dunaway made this one when she was living in England raising her son and still married to Terry O'Neill. I love it! She looks great, she's in most of the scenes, nice costumes, and a fairly good plot and dialog. Wicked she is, she eats it up. This isn't Oscar material, and the cast knows it, it's just a lot of fun. This isn't one of Dunaway's Top 5, but it's totally watchable and you see her in most of the scenes. I would not rate it quite as good as Eyes of Laura Mars or even Supergirl, but it's better than The Temp and The Chamber. If you don't dig Dunaway, you probably will only want to see it once. Otherwise, it's something you would want for your extended Dunaway collection.
