VHS : Guyana Tragedy: Story of Jim Jones
Great actors in this movie, ie..James E. Jones, Rosalind Cash, Irene Cara to say the least. I first saw this movie back in '80. I was a child then and didn't understand much but do remember this storyline being quite chilling. Now many years later I've taken a renewed interest in this story. I've been listening lately to live audio of Jones' sermons and recordings as well as archival footage.
What I don't care much about this movie is the fact that Boothe has no physical resemblance or personality of Jones. I don't think he was the better actor for this role. Also, as stated above, I have been listening to audio and I can tell that there are some discrepancies like words being put in and taken out of the mouths of the people who were actually there. It was quite confusing. For one small ... Read More

Love the DVD. My VCR tape finally wore out. I can really understand the words better- much clearer than the tape.
This is a must have in every home if you like a good action packed movie that has serious moments, good laughs and great lines about how to think about life and living in it.
Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell and Sam Elliott at their best.

VHS : Nixon
As a filmmaker I appreciate Oliver Stone, his provactive, political, conspiratorial, curious, enigmatic, ominous visions of Americana are the stuff of high entertainment. Right or wrong, his works are wonderful cinema, it doesn't matter if his version is slanted to the left, it is a distinct vision and he is skilled at executing it.
Be that as it may Nixon is no JFK. Though both are named for presidents of the same era, one is about a murder and it's associate conspiracies-presented in staggering detail, while the other is a psychological Greek-styled high drama of a hugely important personality, flawed and potent, crumbling and explosive.
Anthony Hopkins disappears into the role, and as these things usually do, a great actor and a great part/material make the best of art. Hopkins makes ... Read More

A film that was clearly inspired by Deliverance, but that quite easily merits viewing in its own right. If you replace adventurers with National Guardsmen you do have almost the same film. However don't let that put you off because this is very well done and probably has more of a brooding sense of menace to it than Deliverance does. The cast are are all good and director Walter Hill perhaps peaked with this film.

The story is slight, but effective, some National Guardsmen upset the locals whilst out on an exercise. The locals aren't happy and seek to punish the soldiers in various horrible ways. When you see this unfold you will begin to see that maybe this film was an influence on the first Rambo film and even perhaps Predator.

Again in another parallel to Deliverance this has a marvellous ... Read More

Oliver Stone's U Turn is a small town Arizona story with love crosses and plot twists galore. A drifter (Sean Penn) breaks down in the Arizona back-woods and gets entangled with a spitfire (Jennifer Lopez) who wants to leave her twisted, abusive husband (Nick Nolte). The husband, on the other hand, wants his wife murdered. The town mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton) is a greasy local who dislikes city slicker outsiders and doesn't aim to make Penn's character's life any easier. Our hero also gets mixed up with a cute local waitress (Claire Danes) seeking refuge from her abusive boyfriend (Joaquin Phoenix).

The movie is a day-in-the-life-of look at a strange little desert town with hidden undercurrents and long-standing family secrets. With an all-star cast and plot upheavals galore, the viewing is a full-on ... Read More

I've shown this film over and over to indigenous groups in Panama, as it conveys extremely well how the spiritual world of american indians is unknown to western-eurocentric cultures, and taught as "savage" or "un-civilized" to indians who end up convinced that their culture has no value. In a world where indians behold some of the keys to the planet's las chance of survival, this film is a good way to restore indigenous culture's place of honor.
