VHS : Dark Command (Colorized)
After Wayne hit the jackpot in John Ford's groundbreaking Western STAGECOACH (1939) he was quickly reunited with his co-star Claire Trevor in ALLEGHENY UPRISING (1939) and again here in the DARK COMMAND (1940). Directed by Raoul Walsh, the man who incidentally gave young Michael Morrison his first starring role as a very young "John Wayne" in THE BIG TRAIL (1929) but it was a box office failure and Wayne was relegated to mainly B-Westerns until rescued by John Ford.

The fact based story is from the period starting just before the outbreak of the American Civil War depicting growing tensions on the Kansas Missouri border leading up to the infamous William Quantrill and his guerrillas burning down the town of Laurence, Kansas on August 21 1863. Based on the novel by W R Burnett Will ... Read More

VHS : They Shall Have Music
This is a pretty good movie, if you like heart warming sappy stories and violin music. It's a great film in it's own respect, but if you're the knid of person who likes musicals full of snappy dance routines and extravagant eye-candy musical numbers, then you had better not buy this. Jascha Heifetz does his thing with class, and Andrea Leeds is her regular good-girl self. If I were you, I'd try and rent this movie if you can find it. BECAUSE IF YOU'D RATHER BUY A "Very Good" COPY OF THIS MOVIE FOR $1,000 DOLLARS, THEN YOU'RE MAD!!!! This is a nice movie, but you're not gonna die if you don't see it! It's over-priced for a movie like itself. So rent it if you're crazy about it, buy it if you're rich, and if you rather not see it, WATCH THE BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936, THE BEST MUSICAL MOVIE EVVVEERR! IT'S ... Read More

VHS : The Story of Louis Pasteur
Paul Muni, who had a propensity for being cast in roles of historical figures scored big in his Oscar winning portrayal in the title role of "The Story of Louis Pasteur". His acting style, honed by years in the Yiddish theatre was perfect for these grandiose parts.

Pasteur, a French chemist in the 1860's is ridiclued and scorned by the French Academy of Medicine for his theories postulating the microbial origins of infectious disease. With the rates of death during chilbirth soaring, Pasteur feels compelled to determine why. Although presenting convincing evidence that lack of sterilization is to blame, he is cast out from Paris at the insistence of Emperor Louis Napolean.

Pasteur settles in Abois where he perfects a vaccine for the prevention of an anthrax epidemic that is decimating ... Read More

I love this movie, it is never on TV anymore and I wish it would come to DVD. I live in Australia so can't even order the VHS as it is not compatable with our system.

This is the best comedy I have seen. And without the language and smut of more modern comdedies. It's all a comedy of errors, Fred landing in with the murderous hillbilly family headed by Marjorie Main. And identical twins played by I think Peter Whitney, one can be incapacitated by a chop to the neck while the other doesn't feel a thing, puts Fred in some dangerous situations. It's a must see.

I bought a box set containing this film and four other Grant classics, This being the second one I've watched is the best so far. This film is full of quick fire dialogue that is funny and intelligent. Grant and Russell are exceptional, but the entire cast is burning on all cylinders in this 70 years fresh "screwball" comedy. If you are looking for a place to start with Cary Grant.....this is a pretty safe bet! the DVD transfer is very good on the box set and it has some interesting extra material.
