Excellent performance by all the actors and opera singers. It was a very good idea to transport the classic opera into a movies version. This adaptation is not new, nevertheless, is a masterpiece for all times. Congratulations !

2.Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas, Domingo starring: Teresa Stratas, Plácido Domingo, Cornell MacNeil, Allan Monk, Pina Cei

VHS : Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas, Domingo
Domingo sings beautifully, Stratas less so but looks and acts the part. The biggest problem is there are so many cuts and shortened arias that you could almost call this "extended highlights". And Zeferelli over-produces, particularly with camera work. If you want a movie version get Anna Moffo's of over 30 years ago. Now there was a Violetta!

3.Puccini - Turandot / Zeffirelli, Levine, The Metropolitan Opera starring: Eva Marton, Plácido Domingo, Leona Mitchell, Paul Plishka, Hugues Cuenod

Where's Cecil Beaton when you need him. When you have the greatest singers of the last half of the 20th century, Nilsson and Corelli, you don't need all this excess! The Met has toned this production down shortly after this broadcast. This production is so busy I hardly even noticed the singing. You'll find every thing you need on the stage but a basket ball court.

4.Puccini - Tosca starring: Catherine Malfitano, Placido Domingo, Ruggero Raimondi, Giacomo Prestia, Giorgio Gatti

VHS : Puccini - Tosca
Buy this video for Domingo and Raimondi. They are fabulous! Catherine Malfitano, I thought, wasn't so great. She sang pretty well, but I've heard better Tosca's than she. My biggest complaint with her is her extremely exaggerated facial expressions. She seems to be going cross-eyed in "vissi d'arte". They are frequent, annoying and just serve to ruin the wonderful atmosphere that Domingo and Raimondi have created.
Aside from her, there is some very strange blue lighting at the end of act 2 that is supposed to be darkness, but only covers half the room, leaving the bottom half dark and blue and the upper half bright and sunny. But Domingo and Raimondi are very good.

5.Celebration of Christmas starring: Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Natalie Cole

Excellent cast, well done BUT the recording should have included subtitles.
Tatiana was one of our most beloved singers.

VHS : Il Tabarro / Pagliacci
This video features Luciano Pavarotti in the role which could not be perfect for Pavarotti's voice. The question is how can pure lyrical voice of Pavarotti handle the title role of "Pagliaci". Listen and watch this video and you going to find out how. I tell you more: Pavarotti is not simply handling the role, he brings such an excitment, such a dramatism to the role that I personally could not imagine. I never knew that singing like this could be possible. His "Vesti La giubba" is not as great as Del Monaco's but listen, listen to him in the last scene, what he does is beyond imagination, he is 100 percent involved in the opera, his eyes are full of hate and despair and his last "La comedia e finita" followed by dramatic melody performed by orchestra is really something that makes you freeze for a moment and then ... VHS : The Three Tenors: In Concert 1994
The Original Three Tenors Concert was held during a very warm month: July. The actual date was July 7, 1990 at Terme di Caracalla in Rome, Italy, to commemorate the World Cup Football finals. The location was spectacular: the fabled Roman ruins of the Baths of Caracalla. The idea for this concert was for colleagues Domingo and Pavarotti to welcome back Carreras after his successful battle with leukemia and to assist his foundation.

Zubin Mehta was the conductor of two wonderful orchestras that night: The Rome Theater Orchestra and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Over 12 million copies of this classical best seller have been sold and it may still hold the Guinness World Record for the best selling album.

José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti absolutely inspired over ... Read More

VHS : Puccini - Madama Butterfly - Herbert von Karajan
From the David Belasco play to Puccini's opera to Schonberg's Miss Saigon, there are many faces of Madame Butterfly. But none is any more exquisite than that of Mirella Freni-- especially as she sings the near-perfect aria, "Un bel di" and the Flower Song duet with Suzuki. However, Ponnelle, who staged and directed the film version, made Placido Domingo as Lt. Pinkerton a little too caddish for my taste. This version seems to resemble a faded memory that speaks not to the intellect but to the heart. It certainly deserves a place in any opera collection.
