VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Although most agree that this was a gripping storyline and a classic miniseries, there were some people that criticized Rachel Ward. I would like to point out the following:

1) She was extraordinarily beautiful, hard to look away from when she was on-screen. It was plausible that a priest or any other man would be drawn to her. I can't imagine a better-cast Meggie than Rachel Ward.

2) Ward did a remarkable job of portraying convincing love scenes with a gay actor (Richard Chamberlain). I do not know if the cast was aware of his proclivity. If nothing else, Ward's gaydar may have signaled her to the truth of Chamberlain's orientation. Both actors deserve credit for pulling this off.

3) The reality on the set was that Ward had found her "masculine ... Read More

VHS : Appointment With Death
This is not quite as polished as Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile, also with Peter Ustinov. It still has the same kind of star power because Lauren Bacall and Piper Laurie are both in this. The story is also still good and I did enjoy it. But I didn't like it as well as the other two I mentioned and I probably won't watch it again.

VHS : Hustler
Dramatic, sometimes downright melodramatic. There's something kind of James Deanish in Newman's character - naive, brash, arrogant - old school 50s tough guy. Shot in black and white, it still feels distinctly early 60s, and comes off as a modern tragedy (if not melodrama). You can feel elements of 50s drama merging with the rough-hewn existentialism of the early 60s, though it's a drama in every sense of the word - nothing twilight zone about this one, except the way characters seem to resemble Rod Serling a little bit in the way they talk. I didn't realize until the end, Paul Newman's financial banker from the underworld is played by a youthful George C Scott, who does a great job. Paul himself (as mentioned) sometimes feels a bit over the top, as does his lady love (an interesting character played ... Read More

VHS : Until They Sail
Though filmed during a time when the moral codes prevented even the slightest hint of inpropriety, Until They Sail dealt with quite a scandalous subject: emotional and sexual relationships which sprung willy-nilly during the stressful times of war. The movie captures all aspects of wartime lonliness: youngest sister Evelyn's harmless puppy crushes, middle sister Dee's passionate sexual flings, big sister Anne's unexpected heartfelt first love, and Barbara's recovery as a young widow in the arms of ever-gorgeous Paul Newman. But what makes this movie so worth watching isn't just the diversity of the stories but the ability to capture the raw emotions and truth felt by the characters. In one poignant scene by a lake, Newman's character forwarns Simmons that he has no aspirations of love or marriage before ... Read More

VHS : Son of Ali Baba
To the first reviewer on this site who thought Son of Ali Baba was the movie where Piper Laurie wiggled through the bars: The movie you are thinking of was called "The Prince Who Was a Thief" and it is a far better movie than this one. Unfortunately, it is a WB movie and still has not been released on DVD or even on VHS (legally) that I know of. If you ever can get a copy of it, this is the movie you were thinking of. It is one of my favorites.

VHS : Children of a Lesser God
I have been friends with a woman who is deaf for almost 25 years. In fact taught me to sign. I am now teaching deaf in a public school. My friend grew up in a residential school. Marlie Matlin's character reminded me so much of my friend, that I spent most of the movie crying. It was a wonderful movie! It really showed me some insight to how my friend grew up.
