There is not much I can say about this movie that hasn't been said beautifully by others. I saw this when I was around 20 years old and it left an indelible impression on me. I am truly grateful for Kate Winslet to have chosen to tell this story. I think that her character is based on the granddaughter of Freud to to be especially familiar for me, as I come from a family of Freudians and yet I too am of similar spirit to Julia. However I only learned that fact after watching it and loving it already. If you enjoyed this movie as I have, I also recommend 'Holy Smoke' which she made with Harvey Keitel before this movie. It is similar but also very different.

VHS : The Conformist
This is a movie that could be made in any era due to its timeless theme. Fascist Italy, however, is a perfect setting for "The Conformist" where as in all totalitarian states conformity is required, not an option. Jean-Louis Trintignant is perfectly cast as Marcello Clerici, a fascist assassin sent to Paris on a covert mission. Trintignant's slight figure, his humorless, unsmiling demeanor, and his consciously formal dress, including a hat that he cannot do without, project him as the perfect wannabe conformist.

Based upon a traumatic childhood experience Clerici not only has a need to conform he is impelled to take conformity to its extreme; assassinating non-conformists. His confession before his marriage is a brilliant scene and Trintignant's interaction with the confessor priest ... Read More

When I saw "Montenegro" all those years ago, it never really occurred to me that such a fantastic, idiosyncratic, and mysterious movie would actually come from a director that made other movies, too. It's just one of those things where each movie seems so ultimately different that it isn't feasible that there could be more of the same.

"Sweet Movie", to put it quite simply, is about excess. It's the story of two women, one a psychotic roaming candy-making pedophile boat woman, the other a delicate model/constant victim of sexual faux pas and impotency. The movie is filled with food, sex, and the gore that comes from food and sex. As the victimized woman finds herself in increasingly ridiculous situations and the psychotic woman puts people in others, many forms of abject art (revulsion/attraction, ... Read More

This was an excellent film. I was confused at first, but then it all clicked about thirty minutes in. There were some really intense scenes that made me jump right off the couch. Loved this film!

VHS : Belle De Jour
There was something about the 1960s that brought out a playfulness in filmmakers which allowed them to not have to condescend to audiences and wrap up every little aspect of the film in a neat little bow. When the films' techniques and narrative strengths worked, as in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup, or Ingmar Bergman's Persona, the result was a great film. When neither worked, the result was a pretentious mess, like Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby or Luis Buñuel's Belle De Jour- his 1967 foray into color film, based upon the same titled novel of Joseph Kessler, released in 1928.
The film has been described as an `erotic masterpiece,' but forty years later one is left with a film that has so little sex in it that it could pass as a PG film if released today, as well as lacking ... Read More

This film is a freewheeling 60s film based on The Double from Dochevsky. Of course it probably doesn't look much like it at all. The film was improvised and shot with sound at a time when Italian cinema used mainly dubbing (still often do). The Revolutions of 1968 were going on in Europe and France at the time and the story of a young man who fails at everything is met by his double who is always a success. Antics and political statements galore. The film is most notable for being one of Bertolucci's first films. It is beautifully restored and looks great. I liked the interview with Bertolucci that comes with the film.

Cute story, poorly executed. The soundtrack was faded and scratchy, the film too grainy, obviously a cheaply made product. I should ask for my money back. oh well
