VHS : Evelyn (Dol)
This movie warmed my heart and I am wondering why it never made it into the theaters,at least in my part of the country. Pierce Brosnan did a fantastic job as Desmond Doyle. Sophie Vavasseur's portraial of Evelyn's simple and guileless faith was touching. The movie presented the very real feel of Europe in the 50s. I grew up in Germany. The little touches, like Desmond heating up milk, brought back memories (hot milk with dry congealed "skin" was a breakfast staple before pasteurization). The central point though was the battle of the little man against the sometimes insane, rigid rules of the day - which few people of that era had the guts to challenge. I was cheering for Desmond all the way and was glad that this true story had a happy end.

Bond fan since DR No. I enjoyed this, mostly. Bond being tortured/rough handled made for a fuller story arc. The many references to earlier Bond films was fun. Exciting sword fight. I personally volunteer to thaw out the frigid Miranda Frost. Halle Berry was a full character, part of the story, not just a side dish. I enjoyed Bond entering the lobby of the fancy hotel, dripping wet wearing only pajama-bottoms, initially dismissed, ultimately.

Excellent movie. It has something for everyone. Action, Sex, Suspence. It was a great movie and enjoyed every minute of it. I especially liked Rene Russo and Brosnan together. They enteract very well in a movie.

VHS : Manions of America
This is the story of Rory O'Manion (Pierce Brosnan) from young adult hood and his fight against the oppressive English in Ireland. From the potato famine and loss of his mother, to his love for the English landlord's daughter Rachel (Kate Mulgrew: of Star Trek Voyager),and subsequent flight to the shores of America. From poor to rich in America, but still longing for the freedom for his beloved Ireland. Also starring Linda Purl (The Exorcist), Nicholas Hammond (Sound of Music, Spiderman), David Soul (Starsky & Hutch), and Simon MacCorkindale. Very moving, interesting to watch Pierce Brosnan in the early days of his career.

Brosnan's third Bond movie, The world is Not Enough, is high on action but weak on plot. Robert Carlyle is a pretty good villain but his motivations seem a bit unclear. Sophie Marceu is also very good as the main Bond girl, while Denise Richards' performance is weak and she's completely miscast. Leonard Maltin wrote that the movie makes M (Judi Dench) seem foolish, and he's right. From the earlier movies, I took her to be a bright woman, but in this one she's unbelievably stupid, considering she's the head of an intelligence agency (no pun intended).

I wish they had done some more rewrites on the script and replaced Denise Richards. It's still an enjoyable movie, but not as good as it could have been.

VHS : The James Bond Collection
Okay, these sets suck. Come on, this is James friggin' Bond here!!! We can do better than this. Here's my idea of how to handle the Bond box sets, and with any luck in 2010 they'll this to me. As much as I'd love to see one huge box set, that just wouldn't work. First of all it would be simply too big and too expensive, and second of all with new Bond movies every few years it would be out of date rather quickly. So do them by decades. Dig it - the Bond collection volume 1: The 60's. You could do all the movies released after 62's Dr. No but before 1970, and still have room for a really cool bonus disc. Granted, some volumes would be heftier than others (the 90's would be a bit slim), but with no end in sight for the Bond franchise this seems the best way too go. Plus, if you're like me, ... A great series of hour-long episodes with host John Cleese introducing the human expression. It has some humor, but it is also factual with interviews with professionals and sad stories. This video is valuable for an artist to learn more about the reasons behind expression, but it is also a great video to watch for the sake of learning or information. A great tool for the classroom.

I absolutely loved this movie! I saw it the first time on HBO and after that one time was hooked. If you love Pierce Brosnan then you'll love this movie. Playing a wisecracking unkempt lawyer who always manages to get under his opponents skin, Brosnan is truly a riot. The character clash in this movie is classic and hillarious. Drama mixed with comedy... what a great combination!!

A post-Cold War James Bond might have seemed unthinkable to some. "Bondmania" was a by-product of the tense political and military stalemate that endured between the Soviet Bloc and the West for nearly four decades. Against all predictions, the Cold War ended (thankfully) with more of a whimper than a bang. As a country, we found ourselves shout cries of joy and heave a few sighs of relief, but if it seemed to some to be "the end of history," it also must have seemed like the end of a perfectly good storyline for filmmakers and pulp fiction writers throughout the Western World.

It took a few years, but by the mid-90s, there were new cultural anxieties to be addressed and a new James Bond to meet the challenge. GOLDENEYE's relatively complex plot reflects those emerging anxieties, ones that we ... Read More
