VHS : Somebody Up There Likes Me
Director Robert Wise helmed the great boxing movie The Set-Up , a work scathing in its depiction of the seamy side of the sport .Somebody Up There Like Me takes an altogether more positive view of the noble art and is a thorougly entertaining biopic about Rocky Graziano .Graziano is splendidly played by Paul Newman making his second picture ,after the debacle that was The Silver Chalice,a movie that could have strangled his screen career at birth ,so bad was it .
Rocky was born in the slums of New York ,the son of a boxer whose own career stalled through several losing bouts with the bottle .In and out of trouble with the law as a youth and into young manhood ,encompassing a strech in reform school ,a dishonourable discharge from the Army and a spell in Leavenworth .Rocky eventually ... Well as a former US Army Tanker, I am writing this from that view. I had the privilege of serving with good soldiers, who on one occassion watched this movie together, as a company. The critisicm never ended.
I do like the actors in this movie, but the background, tactics and overall unit organizations shown in this picture, were pitiful. I can understand the equipment that had to be used to film this picture, but the dialogue could of been much more based on military reality. I feel that all the sides protrayed in this picture were not done proper justice. They were protrayed as a bunch of amatuers, fighting a war, like hollywood amatuers playing at war. This picture was put together like a bunch of pix up stix, that were put up half way and forgotten.

When I saw that this film was almost 150 minutes in length, I was curious to see how the film-makers expanded on a story that is only a few pages long in the book of Genesis. As it turns out, I'm kinda sorry I found out. Why? Because the story in this film bears almost no resemblance to that original story. Outside of the characters of "Lot" and his daughters, and the two cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, everything else is either seriously embellished or completely fabricated. In short, it is almost an entirely different story from the original.

Taken on its own, the movie is OK. Some of the special effects are weak, but I realize that it was made in the early 1960s and wasn't a huge budget film. The queen of Sodom, although a non-biblical figure, was played rather well by Anouk Aimee. Stewart ... Read More

VHS : Silver Chalice
One of the worst films in this genre starring Paul Newman, Virginia Mayo, Jack Palance, Pier Angeli, Joseph Wiseman, Natalie Wood, E.G. Marshall, Lorne Greene and Alexander Scourby. The story follows the life of a Greek slave asked to craft a silver chalice to be used at the Last Supper.

Horrible performances and direction all around except for Jack Palance as Simon the Magician: I would give the film a -100 if Palance weren't in it. Given the dialogue and direction, it's immediately evident that those involved knew little about antiquity or anything about film making in general. The horribly fake backdrops leave the impression of a bad play rather than a movie. This is the film on which Paul Newman commented that it would be his last appearance in sandals and a cocktail dress: I'd be ashamed too if I were in ... Read More
