VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his ... Read More

VHS : Critters
CRITTERS is my favorite movie of it's type. I like it even more than GREMLINS (which I love), and far more than any of the other "puppet-monster" movies that came out (Ghoulies, Hobgoblins, etc.). CRITTERS takes us to the tiny town of Grovers Mill, Kansas, the site of an alien invasion. It seems that a renegade bunch of crites ( little, furry, carnivorous space monsters) have escaped from intergalactic prison, and headed straight toward earth for a snack (us)! This leads to a night of horror and hilarity, when the rolly creatures arrive and begin eating any / all flesh in sight! Two extraterrestrial bounty hunters are dispatched to hunt down and destroy the crites before they can fully satisfy their insatiable appetites. The bounty hunters are hilarious, as they can make themselves look like anyone ... Read More

VHS : John & Yoko: Love Story
i loved this movie- have already watched it twice. i have seen other actors "portray" john, but this actor seems to me to have done one of the best, if not the best, portraits of john. the actor is very good at conveying many emotions, seemingly very much like we would think john may have reacted. mannerisms are amazing, but the acting depth really makes this a cut above the made-for -t.v. movie that it is.

the detail is spot on, for fans who are familiar with the scenes, clothing, etc. of the time periods depicted. at times the tableau is right out of a photograph, recreated. amazing. john and yoko's music is used in various ways all through the movie, to great effect. the heartbreaking ending is mostly left to our imaginations and our pained recollections of that night....

One thing I hate most about this movie is seeing Scout Bozell float up in the air with a whole bunch of balloons like Pascal in the story of the Red Balloon. Due to Newton's law of gravity, this is the strangest thing I have ever seen in my entire life, and that is what scares me most about movies or TV starring real people. So if this is one thing you hate or don't like about TV, do me a favor and don't ever buy this movie.

VHS : Hidden Agenda (1998)
This thriller is supported by uncluttered and steadily paced direction by writer/director Iain Paterson and Kevin Dillon in the leading role of the brother of an American killed in re-unified Berlin. The opening sequence of a clandestine deal shattered by betrayals of loyalty tells us that Paterson hasn't chosen his locale as Berlin for naught, and soon we're mired in the webs of the US embassy, the German police, and the STASI, the former East German secret police. Whilst he occasionally falls back on formula with the I forgot something in my office routine, and the scream of a maid who discovers a corpse gets a laugh because of the cliche, Paterson also shows some originality. The crying of horses in a stable whilst guns are pointed is relieved by the use of a horseshoe as a weapon, we immediately know someone is an hitman ... Read More
