VHS : Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe
I ordered this video for my son who has become a chef. The video was in good, not excellent, condition just as the seller had said. I would buy from him again.

VHS : Il Postino
that thinks that many of these acclaimed Foreign films, and especially, the Italian films ( I am Italian myself ) are dull and plodding??

They take the most small and trivial of situations and then labor through it for 2 hours.

In this case, IL POSTINO, my feeling is that it looked like it had to be chop edited to make a certain amount of running time. There were many jump points that bore inconsistency.

the lead girl couldn't be less interested in the main character, or men, in general, however, several scenes later , she is seductively rolling a plastic ball in her mouth.

The Aunt or matron or whatever she was, of the lead girl, is ready to shoot the suitor with a shotgun, but then, after he whisks her off for an elopement style marriage, we ... Read More

VHS : The Night of the Generals
German Army officer Grau, a colonel in Wehrmacht Intelligence, is talking to a French policeman, Inspector Morand, in Paris. The year is 1944. For two years Grau has been investigating the psychopathic murder of a prostitute that took place in Warsaw. The suspects are three Wehrmacht general officers. Says Inspector Morand as he wonders why Grau is so persistent in his investigation, "Murder is the occupation of generals."

"Then let us say," Grau replies, "what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small. Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small entrepreneur."

The Night of the Generals is a mess. It sprawls all over the place, from Poland to Paris to Germany; from 1942 to 1944 to 1963. We have everything from warfare in cities ... Read More

VHS : Zazie Dans Le Metro
Louis Malle's visual sense of humor is wonderful in Zazie, and he seems to have brought off a stylistic translation of Queneau's linguistic sophistication into the visual - since it clearly couldn't be done reasonably in dialogue. I loved the cartoon-parodies (talking Bugs and Wile E. here) and the silliness all-around, with visual and kinetic wit. I've only looked over the beginning of the book in English translation (also impossible); rather different from the film, but vive le difference! (BTW scant traces of C. Demongeot on the Internet except for two minor roles including a Zazie cameo. Mylène is too young to be her mother.)

VHS : The Return of the Musketeers
It was good to see the 'boys' in action again. The 'twist' of Athos and Arimis not trusting d'Artagnan was good. Otherwise, most of it was boring. I loved the 3 and 4 Musketeers, the 3 being my favorite.

8.La Grande Bouffe starring: Marcello Mastroianni, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, Ugo Tognazzi, Andréa Ferréol

VHS : La Grande Bouffe
Surprisingly, this middle aged boys' weekend-out is much more sexy than many pure-porno movies, but a bit boring for stupidity of a realm screened.

A very good production of a favorite French comedy (with sub-titles). An outstanding cast and a fun plot. A female French Chief Inspector of Police is much more interested in romantically pursuing a reluctant, liberal "anti- police" professor than solving a serial killing which occasionally interferes. Typical of "Pardon Mon Affaire" and "The Tall Blonde Man" era. What favorably impressed me about Amazon was that the original copy that I was sent was of rather poor quality. When I contacted the seller, despite some initial well intentioned confusion in which they kept offering a full refund if I so desired, they rapidly sent a replacement copy in excellent condition, at no charge.

VHS : Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate)
For my money, this is one of French director Bertrand Tavernier's best and most imaginative films, based on a Jim Thompson novel and filmed entirely in Senegal - transported there from the American South. A 2-hour film, shot in muted colors and to a great extent with a Steadicam, it has a look and feel that studiously avoids the exotic and any of the cliches and stereotypes that Western audiences might have about Africa. While technically a film noir in its subject matter and its focus on crime and the criminal mind, it also avoids the cinematic conventions of that genre, with its sun-drenched images and its mix of dark psychological drama and cold-blooded violence with comedy and farce. A story without a moral center, it refuses to find a neat way out of the conflicts it creates, and neither love nor the judicious use of firearms is able ... Read More
