I ordered this movie to give as a gift. It arrived promptly, but I can only assume it was a quality DVD because I haven't heard anything from the recipient yet.

VHS : I Remember Mama (1948)
I finally got around to watching this movie after knowing about it for some time and coming close to watching it once. I found it thoroughly delightful with just the right amount of sentimentality, not overly mushy. Being a book lover and especially of English literature, I particularly enjoyed the references to some of my favorite books. While the film obviously centers around the mother (played wonderfully by Irene Dunn in a role like no other I've ever seen her in) I think tribute should also be made to the somewhat silent yet strong role the father played. I particularly liked the way he offered coffee to the daughter when she so obviously had "grown up" (as well as the look on his face when the mother doused with cream) and the "smoking" lesson he taught his son. But the whole movie ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan's Secret Treasure
This is one of the very best of the Tarzan entries. MGM built an entire river and jungle covering eighty acres for this one and the underwater sequences shot in Florida are some of the best in this very popular series starring athletic Johnny Weissmuller as Edgar Rice Burroughs' jungle hero and pretty Maureen O'Sullivan as his mate, Jane.

Everything about this one is top-notch. Cedric Gibbons was in charge of art direction and the screenplay from Myles Connolly and Paul Gangelin is excellent, offering plenty of drama and humor, and a bit of jungle romance. A superb cast of screen veterans, including Tom Conway, Reginald Owen, Philip Dorn, and Barry Fitzgerald, add excitement and adventure to the very successful Tarzan franchise.

VHS : Fighting Kentuckian (Aniv)
John Wayne is well known for his westerns. The setting of this 1949 flick is Alabama, involving men who came from Kentucky. So this is technically an "eastern". The scenes are apt for the early 1800's: Soldiers are still using flintlocks, Alabama is about to be admitted to the Union as a state, and there is a large group of French citizens exiled after Napoleon's ignominious defeats.

John Breen (John Wayne) falls in love with a French woman. Trouble is, she is already earmarked for an arranged marriage to another man. A love triangle develops. Breen is determined to marry her. But he adds to the problems by pretending that he is a surveyor. He also finds out that there is a scheme afoot to defraud the French of some of their property by moving the posts that define the boundaries of the property. ... Read More

Be warned, this is not your typical Bogart movie if all you are used to is Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon, however it is highly recommended if you want to see Bogart in a different type of role, and don't mind him being not as noble as some of his other films portray him.
