Mighty Aphrodite (1995) won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Mira Sorvino, and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Woody Allen. Sorvino, the Harvard educated daughter of actor Paul Sorvino, plays a squeaky-voiced, potty mouth hooker. Her character is none too bright, and though she aspires to be an actress, and has appeared in several pornographic films, she is terrible. Somewhat of a stretch, considering that Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award winner, and she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in East Asian Studies. While at Harvard, she helped found the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, one of Harvard's premier co-ed a cappella groups, not to mention spending a year of study in Beijing. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and also speaks French. The Oscar ... Read More

And you'll find yourself falling in love with it. Alan King -- "Max" --- is hilarious and Ali McGraw perfect in this hilarious upscale comedy. Fun actors included: Keenan Wynn (as a ailing Jewish tycoon); Dina Merrill (as Alan King's blueblood but drunken wife); Judy Kaye (great Broadway actress as Alan King's daughter "Baby" -- her daughter is named "Newbaby"); Myrna Loy (yes the old film star) as Max's sec'y; and Tony Roberts as Keenan Wynn's effete and homosexual movie company president.

VHS : Q the Winged Serpent
"Q" is one of my favorite films. Helmed by one of the great cult writer/directors, Larry Cohen, this movie is an outrageous blast! Michael Moriarty is PERFECT as the much put-upon Jimmy Quinn, a small-time hood/loser who stumbles upon the hidden nest of an ancient creature that's decapitating roof-top sun-bathers and window-washers! Awesome! Of course, being a cynical, world-weary type of fella, Quinn decides to keep the location of the murderous monster a secret until the city coughs up some serious green. Moriarty's voice inflections and mannerisms are absolutely infectious! At one point, at the end of his emotional rope, he lies down on the couch and drones out a line from a scat song he performs on the soundtrack: "Evil dream, go away!" David Carradine provides solid support, also, as the ... Read More

I was waiting for this film to come out on DVD. It's an exceptional movie with one of the finest performances by an adolescent that you will ever see.

Albert Finney and Diane Keaton star as the Dunlaps, a successful Marin County-living couple whose marriage falls apart. Dana Hill portrays Sherry, the oldest of their four daughters (a very young Tracey Gold, Tina Yothers and Viveka Davis round out the other children).

Sherry is old enough to see what is happening, but too young to handle the aftermath. I believe that a Washington Post critic at the time, said Ms. Hill's portrayal was the finest adolescent dramatic performance ever filmed. One would be hard pressed to argue that point.

Keaton and Finney were both nominated for Golden Globes. For the amazing dramatic peformances ... Read More

If you speak French or can put up with sub-titles, you will really enjoy this movie. If on the other hand you just want to see God's most beautiful creatures, this is a must see. Not an ounce of silicon in sight. Zalman King eat your heart out. Sophie Marceau's body is the epitome of perfection and everything I had ever fantasized about. Her part is even in English. Even the fact that she was nude with John Malkovich did not detract for her beauty. Sophie is a ten if ever there was one. Chiara Caselli and Inés Sastre are 9.5s. Oh yeah, it is a pretty good story. Several little vignettes are woven together in a sort of Six Degrees of Separation style.

It is no wonder why they used the same actor to portray dracula in the buffy series. this film is by far the best dracula film out there. IT only leaves you wishing there was more vampire myth at the end.

VHS : New Age
This is still one of the sharpest dark comedies around about LA and failed yuppie dreams I have ever seen. Makes everything Steve Martin attempts to be as lame AS THEY ARE. Infinitely quotable lines: "Money isn't money! Money is a representation of something else!" Peter Weller and Judy Davis were pitch perfect. The NEW AGE trappings that abound in the movie are not just scattershot- there is a flirtation with BDSM, there is alternative cures for Cancer, there is applied and mis-applied Taoist and Buddhist philosophy and there is real satire on the Consumerist Culture. Plus there is Patricia Heaton before garish flaming red hair and multiple cosmetic surgeries!

For a kind of similar experience, see Albert Brooks' "Lost in America."
Then re-think "American Beauty."

THIS FILM is NOT a MESS, and I'd be thankful ... Read More

It's made in the 80's. It includes 80's music, 80's sci-fi visual effects, Rastafarian aliens... need I say more? The plot is simple. The character's are standard. In fact, it's mundane qualities are so mundane that they make the movie enjoyable. This movie relishes in it's ridiculousness all the while throwing in witty comments and jokes. And there's a watermelon. Don't expect groundbreaking performances or a plot that will make you think - this movie is about fun. So, "laugh-a while you can-a monkey-boy."
