VHS : Robin Hood (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)
As with many stories, this one comes from several versions, even within the Disney group. This is basically the version I remembered of the animated presentations of Robin Hood. Look for some of the Robin Hood cliches, like the arrow splitting the arrow already in the bulls eye (Can this really be done? Check with the Myth Busters!)

Sherwood Forest may be close to home. During one of the fight scenes, I distinctly heard the "fight song" "On Wisconsin." How did this end up in the movie? Was this some kind of product placement?

Buy it. Enjoy it. Give a copy to a kid you know. Keep a copy for the kid you are.

VHS : Quo Vadis (1951)
Quo Vadis is one of those large scale biblical epics that has withstood
the test of time. and as they did with special edition dvds of Ryan's
Daughter, Dr. Zhivago, Mutiny on the Bounty, Grand Prix, Ben-Hur and How
The West Was Won Warner Brothers Home Video has done a splendid job of
restoring and remastering the film. but why the break??? a 2hr.52min.film
can easily fit on one side of one disc.

3.The Egyptian starring: Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Gene Tierney, Michael Wilding, Bella Darvi

VHS : The Egyptian
This film is fondly remembered from my childhood (Egypt was a terrific craze at the time - King Tut exhibit, Elizabeth Taylor's movie, the Mummy) and I still enjoyed it. But ... its very sexist. All Mika Waltari's (the author of the novel the script is derived form) work has a masochistic woman as the terrible, unattainable, irresistible and finally destroyed woman. Most of his novels have the woman being beaten. This one only dies of a disease (however in poverty and disgrace). So, yes, I still liked it (especially the references to Tutankhamen - see Velikovsky's analogy to the Oedipal myth) but I really look forward to the day when woman writers/directors get together to create these huge romantic epics with women who aren't either doormats for the hero or die.

VHS : Animal Farm (1999)
This is a well-done adaptation of the book. It isn't perfect, but kids like it much better than the 1950s cartoon version. For teachers looking for a good version to accompany the book, I recommend it. I have used both and sometimes use both as a good jumping off place for discussion.

5.Appointment With Death starring: Peter Ustinov, Lauren Bacall, Carrie Fisher, John Gielgud, Piper Laurie

VHS : Appointment With Death
This is not quite as polished as Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile, also with Peter Ustinov. It still has the same kind of star power because Lauren Bacall and Piper Laurie are both in this. The story is also still good and I did enjoy it. But I didn't like it as well as the other two I mentioned and I probably won't watch it again.

6.The Great Muppet Caper starring: Charles Grodin, John Cleese, Diana Rigg, Louise Gold, Robbie Barnett

VHS : The Great Muppet Caper
If the Muppet Movie receives five stars, there is no way The Great Muppet Caper deserves more then three. It's still worth watching, but can't hold a candle to the Muppet Movie

VHS : Luther (2003)
Well acted and entertaining, this movie would be a good watch if it were total fiction. However very much of it is fact. A great look at a man who refused to follow the status quo of the established church and turned to the teachings of Christ and the bible to base his faith and life on. Both entertaining and thought provoking.

VHS : Lola Montes
Lola was a wildly creative woman who kept reinventing herself to meet her ever-changing needs. Passionate, headstrong, opportunistic, shameless, amoral, she essentially flipped a not-so-ladylike finger at a repressive society and lived a fascinating life that today would garner headlines but lift few eyebrows. Her life story might even seem somewhat inspiring today -- how in the world did she have the strength? The nerve?

This gorgeous movie made in the fifties has little shock and awe factor now but back then we would have viewed it from behind our (figurative) fans. Oh my wasn't she naughty, wink wink--an attitude younger viewers probably won't understand. Today the film is definitely worth a look as a stylized piece of art. Martine Carrol, who was many times more beautiful than Lola was, did ... Read More

I wish they'd do this one on DVD, because MArty takes the classic Legion Etrangre film (Gary Cooper 1939) and trashes it the way Mel Brooks did "Blazing Saddles" on the Western Genre..... Marty Feldman is a fogotten comic in the vein of Laurel and Hardy or Buster Keaton... When he plays second fiddle.... you laugh a lot!!!!!! DO IT IN DVD......PLEASE!!!
