VHS : Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969)
Ive been waiting such a long time for this movie to come out on dvd. It wasn't the best musical but I found it very entertaining and Peter o"Toole is especially wonderful as always. Petula Clark is fine and touching and love her singing.

VHS : Rosebud (1975)
Preminger, who is my favorite American director, was not spared the brunt of bad reviews and publicity towards the end of his career. At times, the critics were quite savage in their analysis of his latter films. In my opinion, this was a time where he shined the most, and was in top form. He tackled new ground and continued to break taboo without audiences knowing. From TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME JUNIE MOON to SUCH GOOD FRIENDS to ROSEBUD and finally to THE HUMAN FACTOR, this was another renaissance for Preminger. Agreed, ROSEBUD was not a masterpiece. Elements such as Cliff Gorman's atrocious acting, loose ends and implausibility hold it back from reaching its ultimate goal, but it was not the turkey that Leonard Maltin (et al.) made it out to be. On the contrary, it is a highly atmospheric ... Read More

VHS : The Night of the Generals
German Army officer Grau, a colonel in Wehrmacht Intelligence, is talking to a French policeman, Inspector Morand, in Paris. The year is 1944. For two years Grau has been investigating the psychopathic murder of a prostitute that took place in Warsaw. The suspects are three Wehrmacht general officers. Says Inspector Morand as he wonders why Grau is so persistent in his investigation, "Murder is the occupation of generals."

"Then let us say," Grau replies, "what is admirable on the large scale is monstrous on the small. Since we must give medals to mass murderers, why not give justice to the small entrepreneur."

The Night of the Generals is a mess. It sprawls all over the place, from Poland to Paris to Germany; from 1942 to 1944 to 1963. We have everything from warfare in cities ... Read More

In the product description is said it has subtitles in spanish, due to the fact that my dad only speaks spanish I thought it would be a great gift for him and make him remember his days of youth, but its just a BIG LIE!!! the movie only has 2 languages: English and French.
Now why didn't we returned it? We are too far away to start a process like that and my dad was too excited to take a look at the description that he just peeled off the wrap.

VHS : The Last Emperor
This review is not so much a review of the movie or this release in particular. It would seem that there will be no shortage of glorious reviews of this movie and I would just be adding my voice to the gale winds of appraise. I write this to clear up the common mis-perception that the longer cut of this movie is a director's cut.

The previously released longer cut of The Last Emperor which was released on DVD and subsequently labeled as a "Director's Cut" is in fact a longer, made for television mini-series version that was made to satisfy a particular distribution/production deal. Bertolucci himself has gone on record to say that the actual version of the film that he envisioned is the one that went out to theaters, thereby making the shorter "Theatrical Cut" the actual director's cut.

Being the huge fan ... Read More

Otakar Votocek is the genius who penned this imaginative and insightful film which he also Directed WINGS OF FAME is a rare treasure in a world full of bad scripts where "personalities are replacing the true thespians" and worshipped as stars.Beautifully haunting in a world that is an island unto itself and the ocean is nowhere.Having Jello, Edie Sedgewick and Lassie all converge with the Lindbergh Baby on this island paradise is just the tip of the iceberg.Marie Trintignant is hauntingly beautiful as a lost siren whose song is mesmerizing.Peter O'Toole is an over the top movie star who demands to be worshipped and is so odious you really want to toss him into the pool with a scotch chaser.Colin Firth as O'Toole's stalker and killer is a bit of a puzzle at first. He seeks out a brilliant therapist to find himself while Einstein rolls around ... VHS : The Bible...In the Beginning
This is a Genesis movie that was made in the 1960's and because of this moves in the 60's movie way, it is slow for the modern audience. The dialogue seems to be half pulled from the Bible and half written for a modern audience. But that can be somewhat forgiven.

It does show Creation, Adam and Eve and the Flood. The Noah's Ark portion was my favourite, mostly because I like animals, but also because it shows the point of the story very well. I thought this was the best part of the film altogether.

The film ends with the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac, which I felt was pretty well done. The part of the Abraham story I didn't like was the portrayal of Ishmael as some evil sort of child corrupted by his mother. That seemed really unnecessary.

But, being from the 60's, it's a family friendly movie. ... Read More
