VHS : Surviving Picasso
I have looked for this movie for years to come on DVD...but alas it hasn't happened yet. This movie, which is based on a book, truly shows what it was like to have to live (or 'survive' as you will) with someone who is egocentric and artistic. I don't understand why people wanted this movie to explain Picasso as a person...the title tell you its about someone who SURVIVED Picasso. This man didn't want to be understood. He didn't care about that so appreciate this movie for what it is, a great example of how someone can almost be 'swallowed' whole by another larger than life figure but who is able to transcend all that and stand on their own in the end. This movie has so many great aspects to it outside of the acting so I urge people to give this movie a chance because it is a fantastic journey ... Read More

VHS : Mrs Winterbourne
Yes, this movie is cute if not completely unrealistic, improbable and beyond predictable. I liked it, but I have to be realistic when I say that this is not a great movie. The acting is subpar (MacLaine really should have been in more of the film) and the script is very generic. There are all your usual plot twists and developments, the characters are very unoriginal and the ending is as far fetched as they come.

The story is that of Connie Doyle, a young woman who leaves home at a young age, winds up living with a creep named Steve who gets her pregnant and throws her out. When she meets Hugh Winterbourne and his lovely new wife Patricia she makes quick friends, but when the train they are on crashes and Hugh and Patricia are killed Connie finds herself being mistaken by Hugh's family (who ... I'm pretty sure that when I saw this in theaters, I saw a more "open-ended" alternate ending. There was no "wheelchair ending" in the movie I saw. I think the alternate ending I saw is a feature of this DVD, but I am not 100% sure.

VHS : Homicide - The Movie
I see that most people are asking a pretty outrageous price for this movie whenever it comes available. It is a great conclusion to a great series, and not only brings the entire cumulative Homicide cast from all seven seasons together one last time, it also wraps up Tim Bayliss' story from the series finale. However, for under two hundred dollars, you can buy the "Homicide Life on the Street - Complete Series Megaset" and have all seven seasons of Homicide, the Law and Order cross-over episodes, bunches of extra features, and this movie all on DVD. I consider that to be a much better buy.

>>>HERE THERE BE SPOILERS <<<

I was favorably impressed by the first 80 minutes of WotW, which in part explains why I was so bitterly annoyed at the final 40.

First off, Tom Cruise did a decent job in the lead as Ray Ferrier, he cried believably, flashed the pearly whites when needed, but otherwise seemed overwhelmed when called on to be manly--for the Ray character is a feckless wimp. His kids have contempt for him, his ex-wife patronizes him, even her new husband pities Ferrier. He's an irresponsible sloven, a cipher that I found it impossible to like or even care about.

Unfortunately, Ray Ferrier is the most likable character in this movie.

His son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) is depicted as the usual Hollywood version of an angst ridden, rebellious teen who hates his dad. Somehow ... Read More

VHS : Went to Coney Island on a Mission From God... Be Back by Five
This movie is small in scale, but big-hearted. The cinematography is remarkable (Coney Island has never looked so desolate), and the acting is extraordinary. Jon Cryer does the best work of his career--and he co-wrote the script, too. Newcomer Rick Stear holds the screen like a star, and Frank Whaley, Dominic Chianese, and Peter Gerrety shine in supporting roles. There's also an amazing, evocative score by Midge Ure. This is the kind of film that perfectly defines the shape of American independent cinema; an involving story told with humor and grace.
