VHS : Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition)
The Star Wars Saga changed the face of cinema, and even rewrote modern mythology. The journey of the hero, capitalizing on the imagery of medieval Japan, Flash Gordon, World War 2 and the Old West, comes to life in the classic "Space Opera" trilogy that affected an entire generation, and hopefully with this splendid DVD boxset, generations to come.

VHS : Tales From the Crypt (1972)
a tremendous entry in the delightful amicus multi-scary-story films of the 1960s and 70s . all are worth checking out (ownership of all titles is a great investment) . they just don't make them like this any more . and never will again .

VHS : Hound of Baskervilles (1959)
I typically like the films from the Hammer Production. The 1959 version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of my favourite. Christoher Lee, whom I like very much, is simply superb in this film. Peter Cushing and Andre Morell are also excellent. The setting, the atmosphere and the whole feeling of the story are beautifully rendered. I highly recommand this DVD to others. For those who like this genre of films, it is a good one to add to one's collection.

VHS : A Chump at Oxford
This movie begins with Stan and Ollie in the employment office, waiting for any available job they can do. Ollie happens to overhear that a butler and maid, preferrably a married couple, are wanted to host a swank party in town, immediately, and decides the two of them will take the job. Stan is forced to put on female attire and a curly blonde wig, far from the first time he's dressed in drag in one of their movies. This entire scene at the dinner party is a remake of their 1928 silent short 'From Soup to Nuts,' only Stan wasn't in drag in that one. Mr. Vanderveer, the host of this party, is played by the great character actor Jimmy Finlayson, at his usual best. However, things at this party don't quite go as planned, and the boys quickly find themselves out of a job. They are reduced to working as ... Read More

VHS : Dr. Terror's House of Horrors
This is old school English horror, with maximum emphasis on performances and atmosphere. The film is divided into several creepy tales regarding death and doom, and with a cast lead by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee this is a quality flick. Recommended.

VHS : Evil of Frankenstein
I am reviewing this film on the VHS page as it is only available on DVD on Hammer Horror series. It is included on this set with 7 other classic Hammer horror films. I will review that set when I finish all 8 films included. NOW FOR THE FILM REVIEW........This is the third entry in the Frankenstein series that Hammer produced. My review is certainly bias because I saw this in the theater as a wee lad and it scared me pretty good! Watching the film now, close to 40 years later, I found that it was not on the level of the first two films......don't get me wrong, I do like this film very much but, for nostalgia reasons. Universal let Hammer use the famous monster make-up from the black and white original.......well sort of!?? Looking at the make-up in this entry now it was almost laughable! I was confused watching this ... Read More

VHS : Island of Terror
Neat little monster flick even if it did miss the Fifties by a few years. Good locations and color photography (filmed in 1:85 ratio) adds to the effect and the monsters are adequate for a film of this type.

Beware that the UK DVD release has the 'hand amputation/blood squirting scene' completely edited out, but I do hear that the German DVD release has the scene still fully intact.

All in all, a fun fifties style 'monster on the loose/trapped on an island' story with a tinge of British flavor which always adds some intelligence to these type of sci-fi flicks.

VHS : The House That Dripped Blood
'The House That Dripped Blood.' Hmm. Well, the title is very different from the plot of the movie. But do not get me wrong, this movie is great! It's about a detective who investigates the supposed killing of a famous actor. He meets some people that tell him wild stories of what had happened to the previous people who lived there: a woman whose husband now sees illusions of the creepy things he writes; a man who goes into a wax museum and becomes drawn to a particular display; a man who, for some reason, hides his young daughter from civilization; and, of course, the film actor who buys a cloak, and mysteriously disappears. If you like this movie like I did, I recommend a few other Hammer Studio classics, such as 'And Now The Screaming Starts' and the original 'Asylum.'

VHS : John Paul Jones
Hollywood has certainly done much worse than this movie. John Paul Jones was a major naval figure in the American Revolution, though seagoing operations in that war were overshadowed by land operations. His life is covered with an acceptable degree of historical accuracy in this movie. (It appears to me that the script was probably based on Augustus C. Buell's 1900 two volume "biography". For the facts, trust Samuel Eliot Morison's unsurpassed 1959 biography of Jones.) The normal artistic liberties are taken without changing the overall story. The filming and color are quite good. However, it suffers from very stiff acting, particularly from Robert Stack. The VHS tape has also suffered the cutting room floor treatment by trimming a widescreen movie to fit the 4:3 TV screen. Worth seeing once, it might be wisest to either ... Read More

10.Brides of Dracula starring: Peter Cushing, Martita Hunt, Yvonne Monlaur, Freda Jackson, David Peel

VHS : Brides of Dracula
Brides of Dracula was the first of Hammer's many sequels to their breakthrough hit, and it's not just the best of the series but one of their very best pictures. There's no Christopher Lee this time round - in fact, there's no Dracula at all - but there's a lot of imagination at play here in a beautifully plotted story that sees Peter Cushing's Van Helsing coming up against David Peel's Baron Meinster, a follower of Dracula's vampire cult, after Yvonne Monlaur's schoolteacher ill-advisedly releases him from the shackles his not-as-mad-as-she-looks mother keeps him in.

There's a lot going on beneath the stylish surface here - a psychiatrist could probably have a field day with the curious relationship between Peel and Martita Hunt ("We pray for death, both of us. At least, I hope he prays"), not to mention Van Helsing's ... Read More
