VHS : The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set)
As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.

VHS : A Midnight Clear
I watch this film every Christmas Season.Odd choice? Well, if you consider that the Season is about "peace, good will to all" then yes.A MIDNIGHT CLEAR is a look at the two small platoons of beleagured soldiers from America and Germany (who make it quite clear that they are not Nazis, and the F%$# Hitler!) who meet quite unexpectedly in the Ardennes Woods in December 1944 in the final year of WW2.The point of the film is to show that War is not all that some glorify it to be.This is a "different" approach to War, much like the recent LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA where human faces and emotions are placed upon both "the home team" and "the enemy." That both of these platoons discover each other at Christmas and exchange gifts, songs and negotiate a "surrender" removes us from the battlefield and allows ... Read More

The Last Seduction (John Dahl, 1994)

That John Dahl's made-for-cable flick The Last Seduction ever got a theatrical release-- after its cable debut-- is pretty remarkable. That it subsequently wound up on any list of the thousand-best films ever made is astonishing. That it ended up on four of the ten lists of this type of whose existence I am currently aware is the stuff of Hollywood legend.

It's about Bridget Gregory (Linda Fiorentino, recently of Liberty Stands Still), a nasty sort who first ruins her husband's life, then heads off into the sunset, landing by chance in the tiny town of Beston, New York. In Beston, she hopes to lay low until her divorce is final, but two things prevent that from happening. One is that her husband would like the $700,000 she stole from ... Read More

Sly plays a human being for a change--and I dug the hell out of it. He only raises his voices once--during a shouting match with the always convincing Ray Liotta.
Entire cast is amazing. You know who they are, so there is no need to list all the names.

Smartly written and directed by the talented James Mangold. This is a real movie (for grownups) and not some mindless shoot-'em up.
Mangold, as writer, first and foremost, understands the importance of strong character development and the stories he tries to tell (usually) have substance and are about something.

VHS : The Last Ride
This is one of Rourkes lesser known movies that went straight to video, but dont let that fool you, as this is another great leading performance by Rourke. Micky does his job as an actor breathing life into his charater, and bringing the movie alive in a way that lesser actors would fail. The actress who plays his love interest does a fine job as well. Where the movie falls short is in the paint-by-numbers Hollywood type story line, and a terrible performance by an actor who plays the crazy redneck brother of Rourkes love interest, who plays the stupid, inbred, trailer park, white trash, bad guy the same way we've seen this type of character played a thousand different times in other movies... only worse. Thankfully, he is only in a few scenes. All in all, this is a well-acted, solid good little film. ... Read More

VHS : Case for Murder
Very surprising movie. Great Performances by Jennifer Grey, Eugene Roche and Samantha Eggars. I don't think that I have ever seen Peter Berg in too many other films. In the 40s this would've been called a B-Movie, but quality wise it gets an A. Surprising, but logical ending. In the last scene Berg echoes Cagney's famous last line from "White Heat". Movie will really hold your interest.
