VHS : Gay - The Beggar's Opera / Gardiner, Hoskins, Daltrey, English Baroque Soloists
First off, this DVD has some issues. The video is soft and the audio is not as clear as it could be. Howver, by no means, is the current DVD unwatchable. In fact, I am surprised and pleased that it is available at all!

Although not a perfect production by any means, there is much here to merit notice. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent. Daltrey conducts himself fairly well in the lead role, although his voice doesn't seem especially suited to this style of singing. But, they needed a name and they wanted to make the production seem more hip, so what are ya gonna do?

This is a long overlooked comedy film starring Dudley Moore. The music he wrote for the film is, for the most part, wonderful. The silly story ia about a struggling 29 year old composer, Rupert Street, who becomes determined to write his first hit London West End musical and find the girl of his dreams to marry before he turns 30. But he's 29 and doesn't have much time. The story mixes everyday life in Rupert's life with a lot of total fantasy sequences as he imagines how the musical he's writing would be performed, imagines himself as Mozart and other famous composers writing their symphonies, etc. The story even has a mystery sub-plot involving a dectective -- filmed in a overtly dramatic 1940s type way complete with a narrative. All of this is, I think, fun to watch. We even get to see and hear ... Read More

I am a James Bond purist. I've seen each James Bond movie (except Quantum of Solace) at least twice, and own all of the Special Edition DVDs from 2002. I have come to the conclusion that this is the best of the Bond films.

I've read several of the James Bond novels, and I believe that starting with Goldfinger, the film series began to rely too heavily on gadgets and other things that distracted from the plot. This and Dr. No are the most faithful to the novel series, and they also have the best production values. FRWL is the better of the two.

Since I already own all of the films on DVD from 2002, I was reluctant to re-purchase them when they were released as "Ultimate Edition" DVDs a couple years ago. I wound up not re-purchasing them, and I'm glad I didn't. I just bought ... Read More

VHS : Darling
"Darling" was Julie Christie's breakthrough in 1965,along with the epic "Doctor Zhivago." In "Darling", Christie is Diana Scott, a sophisticated London model. She's flighty and dreamy, always hoping for happiness and love. First, she shacks up with a married man, the suave Dirk Bogarde; later, she falls for the slimy playboy Laurence Harvey. In the meantime, she befriends a gay photographer Malcolm and becomes an Italian princess. She tries to become Catholic to please her princely husband. Alone in the palace, she goes mad. The ending is open to interpretation as an old lady sings "Santa Lucia."

"Darling" is a breakthrough film for its time. It addresses hot-button issues like abortion and homosexuality in an intelligent way (for example,a stuttering man claims that London is "rife with homosexuality",and ... Read More

VHS : The Magic Christian
The Magic Christian is an inspired, wacky sixties film, based on the brilliant novel by Terry Southern. Appearing with Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr in the film are Pythons John Cleese and Graham Chapman, Goon Show alumnus Spike Milligan, Christopher Lee, Racquel Welch, Roman Polanski, and Yul Brenner as a lounge-singing transvestite. Paul McCartney wrote the film's theme song 'Come And Get It' performed by Badfinger. I have to admit, this movie makes me laugh. It's a great vehicle for Peter Sellers as the not-so-business-like Guy Grande, and Ringo as his newly adopted adult son. In the story, multi-millionaire Grande has determined that one can use money to teach lessons about the ugliness of greed, elitism, snobbiness, and authority. It is typical of british comedies of the late sixties inasmuch as it climaxes with a scene ... Read More

VHS : Oklahoma!
I loved this production of the play and the filming was unusual in that after a while, I forgot I was watching a play.
The best Curly, Aunt Eller, Jud and Will Parker ever done! I have loved the movie done with Shirley Jones and Gordon McRae all my life, but the acting in it is outdated.
Hugh Jackman was outstanding. He brought depth and distinction in Curly's character that I did not know were there. Then, there is Jackman's voice. It made me forget Gordon McRae forever. So rich, full, expressive and manly. Not to mention, how handsome and virile he was. The scene with his shirt off, made me swoon.
The only actor I was disappointed with is the female lead. I did not think that Julie was beautiful enough but her singing was spectacular. I loved her voice. It will be a long time before Oklahoma is done ... Read More

I bought this tape because it was a stage production of the classic "Oklahoma!". However when I tried to show it in my Drama class there was no picture just snow. The sound was also very distorted. I tried it in another VCR but there was still only snow. The sound was better but no picture. The tape is obviously not any good. I do not recommend buying anything from this seller.
