Humphrey Bogart was probally the big screen's best reprsentive of the hard boiled prive eye, and this film gave him a superlative chance to demonstrate this. the film has been critized for failing to tie up some loose ends-a murder never gets solved, for example-but that aspect simply makes it more realistic. In real life, you always get things that don't add up or fit the general picture. So it's actually more realistic than a move that pretneds to answer all the questions. A superlative movie.

I like these shows where you jump back in time before computers, cordless phones, and pre surgery Liz Taylor. I just watched it for the first time on a hidden channel on cable. It amazes me that people are just as F&^%ed up in 1963. Everything is so timeless. I couldnt help but be sad watching the movie though. It pulls out that dark place in your soul that we try so hard to numb. You may need to open a window and let the sun in, and a bottle of antidepressants or ativan in hands reach watching it though. Or just make a fire, close the curtains and stave off suicide instead! Not a movie for christians even though there are catholics in it, just be warned. Peace out!

I finally got around to watching this movie after knowing about it for some time and coming close to watching it once. I found it thoroughly delightful with just the right amount of sentimentality, not overly mushy. Being a book lover and especially of English literature, I particularly enjoyed the references to some of my favorite books. While the film obviously centers around the mother (played wonderfully by Irene Dunn in a role like no other I've ever seen her in) I think tribute should also be made to the somewhat silent yet strong role the father played. I particularly liked the way he offered coffee to the daughter when she so obviously had "grown up" (as well as the look on his face when the mother doused with cream) and the "smoking" lesson he taught his son. But the whole movie was wonderful ... Read More

Watch-it-or-not-it-really-doesn't-matter film noir about a street tough cop (Ward Cleaver!) on the trail of a cop killer. Poor, poor O'Hara. There are plenty of clues at the crime scene and it looks like an open and shut case, but ol' Det. Whatshisname thinks there's more to the case than meets the eye. It also helps that the wrongfully accused man has a foxy sister. Meow.

Not a bad film, but not a great one either just kind of average. Mann's T-MEN is much better.

I was guided by the customer reviews when I was searching for a treatment of this story that I became interested in and so I selected this production. It is splendid, with sumptuous period detail, fine acting, and the time to tell the story completely. Since this was a television production there are no subtitles to identify places, times or characters so you will have to pay close attention to identify who is who and what their role is. Edward was neither a hero or villain, just a human being who made a decision for himself that a lot of people still find incomprehensible. It's a fascinating story and well told in this production.

If you have read my other reviews, you know I like complex, layered topics. Ida Lupino is now my role model as a filmaker actress. If this film were made today it would be called and "indie". Back then it was called "low budget". Clearly, though, this type of thoughtful, well acted, sensitive, insightful look at a difficult subject is where the indie movement has come from.
This film handles the subject of Bigamy from the standpoint of the story of this "regular guy" who ends up in a situation we come to understand from all its angles, who allows himself to be undone by applying to adopt a child and submitting to the background check.
I can not begin to describe how well this is handled. For a subject that reeks with potential melodrama, every single element is drawn from the characters, ... Read More

"The Wild One" and not "Easy Rider" is the classic of bad boy motorcycle flicks (Sonny Barger of the Hells Angels describes Easy Rider as a movie about two dope dealers, not about bikers).

This is a fun flick with the best part, IMHO, the viewer being able to retro back to the classic bikes and biker clothing of the 1950s. Brando and Lee Marvin play great little roles and as many believe it is Lee Marvin whose character is the forerunner of the 1960s outlaw motorcyclist in tenor and tone.

Well worth the money and a keeper for the DVD shelf library.

I have loved this film since it was first released in Canada. I saw it at a theatre on Yonge Street in Toronto at a Saturday matinee where the kiss between the two men started a mini-riot sparked by some teen-aged boys in the audience. They were probably expecting a gangster movie !
I have over the years recommended the film, and loaned my VHS and DVD copies to people younger than myself who universally seem to have the same reaction, "It is so Seventies !" Never mind that it is one of the best acted films of its decade, and that it unflinchingly examines complex relationships with an honesty and integrity that would not be equaled for many years. (Possibly until BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.)
Essentially it is the tale of a complex triangle, one part straight, one part gay, where both relationships are going down the ... Read More
