VHS : Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
I purchased this video quite cheaply (ex-rental), thinking that the cover looked quite nice. And it was nice, if you can't see very well, but the movie is trash. I can handle B-grade, I sometimes even enjoy a good B romp (ie. 'The Driller Killer' is a classic example of how entertaining the genre can be), but this was just bland bland bland. Incredibly dull scenes were broken up too sparsely by wholesome cheap scares and not very entertaining dream horror sequences. This movie has very little to offer. So, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

This is a little known film directed by Alex Cox and well worth watching. I was Production Manager for the Tucson location. This film is filled with Anachronism's,i. e., all sorts of modern items creep into a film that supposedly took place in the 1800's. It is a sleeper and fun to watch.

Excellent movie, not only accurate of Mexico's political culture but not far from the US's either. Funny dark satire, you won't regret buying this one.

At one level, this film focuses on the much delayed coming of age adventure for Jane Fonda's character, Harriet Winslow, who suddenly decides she has had enough of her mother-dominated spinster school marm life. Yes, we would expect her to be maybe 10-20 years younger than Fonda's 50 years. However, her relatively advanced age makes her crush on Peck's 70 year old character, Ambrose Bierce, more believable. Peck's characterization of Bierce is somewhat at odds with what I have read of this man. We get the impression that, like Harriet, he has forsaken his bookish life, as a sick old man, for a final hands-on adventure, as an aid to the rebels of the Mexican revolution. However, the real Bierce fought in the Civil War and later crossed the continent on another mission. He was not a one-dimensional bookish writer, ... Read More

This movie was really interesting, it shows life for the people who live under a dictator. Very good acting in the part of Selma Hyak and Edward Olmos. Selma's character was that of a strong and determined woman.

VHS : Before Night Falls
This is an artistic and visually bold film about the life of a gay talented poet and writer in the time of the Cuban Revolution. Javier Bardem is excellent as poet Reinaldo Arenas, a peasant child who becomes one of Cuba's great writers. The film takes us from the first days of the Cuban revolution to the dark days of totalitarian repression of all sexuality and creativity that is not condoned by the state.

This is an excellent film, visually compelling with a narrative flow that is not smooth or consistent, but totally engaging all the same. The film artfully and entertainingly deals with the concept of whether and how the work of the artist and the actual life of the artist and then the later artistic depiction of the life of the artist are integrated. Schnabel does an excellent job of taking on this challenge, revealing ... Read More
