VHS : Rhapsody in Blue
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) ... Read More

VHS : King of Jazz
1930's King of Jazz is the best of the early sound cycle of movie studio revues. Very few films shot completely in two-strip Technicolor survive - this is one of them. Warner Bros. probably made the most all-Technicolor films in the early sound era, but since most of them were Vitaphone the films have long since been lost in most cases.

The 1929 and 1930 early sound revues were made by the studios primarily to showcase their talent in an all-talking setting. MGM's "Hollywood Revue of 1929" started the cycle, and did a pretty good job. However, other studios lost sight of the goal and the revues that followed were often clumsily put together and didn't even showcase talent that belonged to the studio.

"The King of Jazz" is a surprise not only because it holds up so well ... Read More

VHS : Strike Up the Band
Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland team up again in this outstanding musical about a group of kids who adore music. Jimmy Connors (Rooney) loves playing the drums, so much so that he scorns girls and goes against his mother's ambitions for him to become a doctor. He ropes a bunch of his friend into forming an orchestra, something more fun than just the school band, and recruits Mary for a singer (Garland). Mary is in love with Jimmy, but he has no time for women, even though a new girl in town (June Preisser) tries to change his mind.

The music in this film is a lot of fun. "Our Love Affair" is a cute song, but it features an absolutely strange presentation of animated fruit playing instruments. This segment was done by uncredited animator George Pal. Very early in the movie is the famous "The ... Read More

VHS : The Fabulous Dorseys
CHANGE OF HEART - new title for HIT PARADE OF 1943 - is a typical "song writers attempt to get a hit" plot with a few twists. Publisher John Carroll steals songwriter Susan Hayward's work and publishes it as his own. She romances as she plots revenge. Lots of numbers competently done but nothing impresses. Hayward is marvelous in tongue-in-cheek performance and Eve Arden delivers her usual acid performance. Oscar Nom for Scoring. It passes the time.

VHS : Fabulous Dorseys (B&W)
They were two brothers who were both in jazz but so different that they could not work together. At least till after the death of their father which brought them together for the production of the concerto of Janet Blair's husband's concerto, and yet under the conducting of a third party. But when they were together they made miracles particularly in their trombone-saxophone duets. The film shows how difficult life was for jazzmen at the beginning, but also how the radio transformed the spreading of this music, and then this spreading was amplified by the recording of their music on records. Jazz is typically American in its use of rhythm and new instruments like the saxophone, and old instruments like the clarinet and the trombone which are perfectly transformed in the process. But most of all, jazz would not ... Read More

VHS : Lady Frankenstein
Lady Frankenstein is one of the films you can find in many multi movie packs due to its public domain nature. I happened upon it through the 50 movie pack of Chilling Classics.(20 bucks for 50 movies not bad) Anyway I was surprised when I popped this obvious schlock horror film into the player because it actually was interesting. Quite a good spin on the Frankenstein story. It starts typical with the mad doctor trying to bring back to life dead tissue. He greases the local authorities to get freshly dead specimens for his experiments and keeps them in his personal morgue. Soon he succeeds in bringing a cadaver back to life and it with the typical bad brain starts to rampage the town. His daughter aka Lady Frankenstein who just by her looks alone makes you a little more attentive to her scenes starts to perfect ... Read More
