This is a great movie. It's a fine Christmas movie, but it's just a great movie for any time. Where I come from, this story is called "Los Pastores." It's a lovely Hispano Christmas tradition--it goes with Posadas--where the whole town goes house to house with Mary & Joseph searching for a room at the inn--and in my part of the world folks have old handwritten scripts in endless archaic Spanish. It's funny, bawdy, and it used to be put on yearly in my town.

But no one is willing to memorize the enormous scripts any more. Kids don't want to rehearse three times a week for a month before Christmas. So lots of people have never seen Los Pastores, or even heard of it.

La Pastorela is Los Pastores with the best folks imaginable for every part. This is the story ... Read More

VHS : Pee-wee's Playhouse Vol. 1-8 Gift Set
My six year-old son and I both enjoy Pee-Wee's clever fantasy land. The playhouse in puppetland is a child's fantasy of fun characters: some are human visitors to the playhouse, like the King of Cartoons who flambouantly introduces a classic cartoon. Others are objects come to life with puppetry, like Chairy, Globy, Magic Screen, Conky the Robot, even Floory speaks. There are several regular animated film features, like the ant farm, claymation Penny cartoon, and the refrigerator food surprising us each time Pee Wee opens the 'fridge door. Each show has a theme and a gentle lesson. Pee Wee himself is funny and friendly. He is acted by a grown up who talks and thinks like a child, and encourages everyone to "scream real loud" every time the secret word of the day is spoken. The interactiveness ... Read More

VHS : Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles
While great comedy should often appear effortless, that doesn't mean that the word should be taken literally, though on one level Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles can truly be said to be an effortless comedy. Absolutely no effort whatsoever has been made: it's in focus and the microphone never creeps into shot as uninteresting things happen in the most uninteresting way possible while the cast are given uninteresting things to say to bulk out the running time to the contractually agreed length, but that's about it for exertion. That the `plot' revolves around a smuggling operation financing a movie studio producing a guaranteed flop third episode in a dead franchise could possibly be seen as a moment of post-modernism, but it's probably just a desperate cry for help from the screenwriters. My little nephew loved Pee Wee. He made sure I had it on every Saturday when I baby sat him. I have children of my own now and bought a couple of VHS for my daughter when she was in Pre-School and she loved it, then my son came along and he is really nuts about Pee Wee, so I went ahead and bought the boxed set. I hope it doesn't wear out soon.

I can understand the appeal of Pee Wee's Playhouse. It is bright, funny and very stimulating for young minds.(I don't exactly know its appeal to the older "kids") I also like the fact that Paul Rubens doesn't underestimate the intelligence of his target audience. He can disscuss complicated subjects like the metamorphosis of a butterfly and to funner topics like preparing ours d'eoursves, parfaits and how to throw a great party for your friends. ... VHS : D.C. Cab
I think this would be one of those movies that receive the 89's cheese award. However it's one of my favorite movies. I love those zany madcap humorous movies. This movie stars Adam Baldwin (Independence Day and no relation to the Baldwin brothers), Max Gail (Barney Miller), Gary Busey, Mr. T, Irene Cara (she has a cameo as well two songs that she sings on the soundtrack), Marsha Warfield (Night Court), Paul Radriguez,Bill Maher and the Barbarian Brothers (David and Peter Paul).

The movie takes place at a taxi cab company in Washington D.C. They are pitted against a rival taxi company called Emerald. D.C. Cab is owned and operated by Harold (Gail) and things aren't going right. They are on the verge of closing down and loosing this drivers. Out comes Adam Baldwin who's father served with Harold ... Like most propoganda done without artistic skill, this movie manages to "teach a lesson" to strictly the group of people who already share it's values and agree with it's tenants. For people who don't share every moral point in this debacle, the movie amounts to an elderly gentleman from the 1800's tottering about during modern times, berating those who don't meet his exacting standards, and then travelling back to his own time so he can deliver the slapdash warning of the oncoming apocalypse, which is certain to be coming soon, because movies have naughty words.
The most glaring mark on this movie's record is it's heavyhanded insistance that there can be no morality without Christianity. So those billions of people who live loving, productive lives as members of other religions, or who were just raised ... Read More
