VHS : Raiders of the Lost Ark
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is universally considered to be an extremely entertaining action/adventure movie, so I won't waste your time reviewing the film itself. If you've already seen it, you know it's awesome; if you haven't... well, to quote Indiana Jones himself: "Trust me." It actually does live up to the hype. What's truly important for those thinking about purchasing this "special edition," however, is a discussion of the bonus material.

The extras on this disc definitely do NOT warrant purchasing this edition if you already own the previously-released Indy Trilogy DVD set. The extras can basically be summed up in a word: "meh." Each of the handful of featurettes is around 10 minutes or less, and there are no surprises. Some brief "making-of" clips from the filming of "Raiders" ... Read More

VHS : Zenon - The Zequel - Disney Channel Original Movie
I've watched this movie SO many times back when it aired on Disney, and I've watched its predecessor and successor as well. It's obviously a Disney movie, made for the 8-to-15 age range, but for someone like me who's into space exploration and future technologies, the movie surpasses the age barrier. It obviously has some pitfalls for older viewers, particularly the that's-too-easy plot line and some of the more embarrassing catch-phrases that the writers created for use as "space slang," but there are also some fantastic space elements in the movie. The costumes used are AWESOME -- I wish that stuff were in fashion, because I'd be wearing it everywhere. The space station sets are futuristic in a realistic sort of way that makes you think, "If I had to imagine what a space station would look like in 50 ... Read More

VHS : Sadat
Made less than two years after Sadat's assassination, the movie makes him out to be a saint. Sadat was no saint, he was a man and he had his faults like any other.

The movie compresses many events in Sadat's life. It appears that both prison sentences he served early in his life are portrayed as a single event. Also, his role in the pro-Nazi Free Officers is not discussed at all, nor would you know that Sadat was jailed while Britain and the Allies were fighting for their lives when Sadat started trying to undermine them.

Given the circumspect nature of the film many key events, formation of the United Arab Republic, Egyptian involvement in Yemen, the War of Attrition etc. are not discussed. However, the film does attempt to convey the byzantine nature of military politics which ran ... Read More

VHS : Johnny Guitar
***** 1954. A movie based on Roy Chanslor's Johnny Guitar and directed by Nicholas Ray. This DVD doesn't offer any bonus features and the copy, in Trucolor, is of average quality. Joan Crawford asks Sterling-Johnny Guitar-Hayden to protect her against Mercedes McCambridge and his friends who accuse her to be the accomplice of the Dancin' Kid. Huge and incredibly intelligent western that propelled Nicholas Ray among the top American directors of the 50's. The work on the colours is superb especially if one thinks of the vulcano metaphor that starts with the explosions caused by the railroad company and ends with the burning of Vienna's saloon. One of the ten best American westerns ever made. Masterpiece.

VHS : I, Claudius
Without a doubt, for an in-depth fictional portrait of another era, this mini-series more or less sets the standard. The acting is uniformly excellent, but the depth of character, placed in context without cheap TV-style simplification, has not yet been equalled in my viewing. I will certainly watch it with my kids and discuss the details for hours and hours.

As with all historical fiction, this version fills in a lot of gaps that we will never know, making events more dramatic or directed by malevolent intelligence, but it is an interpretation that is entirely plausible. This is the artist's license, and Graves was such a scholar that we can trust it. Moreover, it never crosses the line in melodrama or the maudlin.

The story takes place at the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar ... Read More

VHS : From Hell
This is one of my favorite films from Johnny Depp, I've never seen him act so well "normal" in a film. Heather Graham was absolutely stunning in this film, nothing compares to that gorgeous red hair of hers. I couldn't believe how excellent this movie was, with the twists and turns I should have guessed who the ripper was, and felt pretty embarressed when I couldn't figure it out until the end.

Most of the time my mouth was wide open, because of the intensity I got from the lewdness of it all. What did I expect though it was a movie about a serial killer? All the women in the film, really set the profile for a group of prostitutes or "unfortunates". I'm very glad I didn't live on the east end of Britain in the 1880's. I always believed that men killed or raped woman, in order to feel more powerful. I thought ... Read More

VHS : Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Widescreen Edition)
The third chapter of Indiana Jones is awesome and hilarious! Sean Connery co-stars as Indy's dad who always calls him 'Junior' Indy's dad is being held hostage by Nazi's, so Indy must save his dad, and find the Holy Grail before the Nazi's do! Indy's dad makes the movie a lot funnier, like when Elsa is talking to Indy about 'how great IT was', and Indy's dad thinks she is talking to him! I also love God's booby traps while Indy was trying to find the Grail to save his dad because the Nazi's shot him! I highly recommend INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE!!!

VHS : King Lear (1997)
King Lear directed by Richard Eyre was one play based on Shakespeare's King Lear. Richard Eyre tried to put more focus on the characters and what happened in the original play, rather than focusing on stage design. Many people's attention is pulled to the lack of props, because today's society has a lot of scenery and props in movies. Richard Eyre also tried to following the original play of King Lear, which he accomplished. The lines spoke by the actors are from the original play. The actors also look around the age the play suggested. King Lear played by Ian Holm was an older man that looked like a King who would have been ready to divide his kingdom. The daughters Goneril (Barbara Flynn), Regan (Amanda Redman), and Cordelia (Victoria Hamilton) also look around the ages that the original play suggested. Eyre tried to accomplish ... Read More
