VHS : Song to Remember, A
A cameo on Frederick Chopin in his short lifespan. Wilde and Oberon give excellent performances and Paul Muni shines in this one. if you like a good story, lovely music and beautiful scenery, this is a classic well worth adding to your collection. Flicks of this quality, once made, will never be made again

VHS : Juarez
The 1939 film "Juarez" depicts the debacle of the French attempt to establish hegemony in Mexico under the auspices of Maximilian von Habsburg. The unlikely combination of characters involved in the fiasco shows that once again truth is stranger than fiction. Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, styling himself as Emperor of the French, was the master manipulator of the affair which sent the Austrian Archduke Maximilian to his doom. Maximilian's consort was the intelligent and mercurial Charlotte (Carlota) of Belgium, a granddaughter of Louis-Philippe, the Citizen-King. Although "Juarez" is a simplification of an extremely complicated series of events, it brings to life the historical reality of such fascinating characters coming together.

I personally think that the film was misnamed; it should ... Read More

VHS : The Story of Louis Pasteur
Paul Muni, who had a propensity for being cast in roles of historical figures scored big in his Oscar winning portrayal in the title role of "The Story of Louis Pasteur". His acting style, honed by years in the Yiddish theatre was perfect for these grandiose parts.

Pasteur, a French chemist in the 1860's is ridiclued and scorned by the French Academy of Medicine for his theories postulating the microbial origins of infectious disease. With the rates of death during chilbirth soaring, Pasteur feels compelled to determine why. Although presenting convincing evidence that lack of sterilization is to blame, he is cast out from Paris at the insistence of Emperor Louis Napolean.

Pasteur settles in Abois where he perfects a vaccine for the prevention of an anthrax epidemic that is decimating ... Read More

slightly offensive. It's not entirely fair to hold a movie made in 1937 to our standards, but MGM could have showed some courage had they employed Chinese actors for Chinese parts. It's the same type of subtle racism of the day when native Americans in movies were played by whites. It is disrespectful at least. That said the photgraphy is awesome. There's just something about a locust plague in black & white. An excellant but definite fictional Hollywood movie. The life of a peasant farmer Wang Lang. Paul Muni did as well as anyone could have. Nothing special there.
His marriage to slave O-Lan is the best argument for arranged marriage I ever seen. Luise Rainer was a bit underwhelming. Their life is followed from poverty, sucess, starvation, wealth, moral weakness (his) & plague with war thrown ... Read More

VHS : I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang
i purchased this film in the first part of January this year. i remembered seeing this film many years ago on tv. when it was first released i was hesitant to buy it due to the inflated pricing of Amazon. i finally conceded, however, and bought it. it was well worth the price. i am an avid conisseur of classic films, but only a few are engrossing enough to warrant multiple viewings. this is one of those. from the opening credits to the final chilling climax it seizes your attention and never ceases to keep it.

the film conveys the true events depicting the life of Robert E. Burns (though the names are changed in the film). Burns was apprehended, wrongly convicted and sentenced to 10 years of incarceration on a chain gang. that premise alone should warrant interest in this landmark film. i won't divulge any ... VHS : Life of Emile Zola
I was amazed at the power of this "old" movie. Made in 1937, in black and white, obviously, and acted in the over-the-top style that was in vogue in those days (pre-Actors Studio). Yet, dated though some of the aspects of the film are, the message is timeless and certainly is apt for this moment. I won't retell the story, as others here have done a good job and many readers will already know the events on which the film is based. It's certainly worth seeing and pondering how the message applies to today. Zola said, in the end, "Truth is marching on and will not be stopped." Let's all drink to that!

7.Scarface starring: Gus Arnheim, Vince Barnett, William Burress, William B. Davidson, Ann Dvorak

VHS : Scarface
The original scarface, so much different the 1970's remake. The two movies are night and day. This is a true pre-code noir gangster film made by Howard Hughes, loosely based on the life Al Capone who was terrorizing the streets of America at the time, the use of shadow and subtle violence in this movie makes it a very good example of early noir.

8.Commandos Strike at Dawn starring: Paul Muni, Anna Lee, Lillian Gish, Cedric Hardwicke, Ray Collins

VHS : Commandos Strike at Dawn
With a story by Hornblower creator C.S. Forrester and a screenplay by future doorstop novelist Irwin Shaw, 1942's Commandos Strike at Dawn is a solid but overlong wartime propaganda picture that benefits from a good location (Canada standing in for Norway, giving it a similar feel to parts of 49th Parallel), a strong cast (an understated Paul Muni, Ray Collins, Lillian Gish, Cedric Hardwicke and the ever likeable Robert Coote among them, while Alexander Knox does double duty as a cold Nazi and the voice of the commandos' padre delivering a pre-raid sermon) but ultimately just takes too long to get where its going. Certainly the commando raid itself is a long time coming and not particularly excitingly mounted despite obvious extensive cooperation from the Canadian armed forces, although the last few minutes are almost staged as a pure western ... 9.The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie starring: Fernando Rey, Delphine Seyrig, Paul Frankeur, Bulle Ogier, Stéphane Audran

VHS : The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Through a series of interrupted dinners and bizarre dream sequences (even dreams-within-dreams), Luis Buñuel, clearly indulging himself, comically portrays the wealthy elite as incredibly vain, shallow, and hypocritical. These people engage in drug-dealing, infidelities, and other sordid pursuits. The situations in which Buñuel places them are absurd and only serve to highlight their utter baseness.

Believe it or not, I actually had fleeting thoughts of "Seinfeld" when in a dream sequence these self-centered yet perversely likable characters (a dinner interrupted again!) all find themselves in a jail cell.

"The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" is not my favorite Luis Buñuel film. I personally like Belle de Jour and That Obscure Object of Desire more. To me, the humor feels a little dated when viewing it today. ... Read More
