VHS : ER - The Series Premiere
This is not a review of this specific title, but rather of Warner Brothers' "TV Premiere DVD" series as a whole. I would like to make you aware of my issues with features that are apparently prevalent in ALL of the titles in this series, based upon my purchase of one of these titles ("The Flintstones - The Flintstone Flyer").

Although the list of issues below was written specifically for The Flintstones DVD, I highly suspect that most (if not all) of it applies to this and all of the other titles in the "TV Premiere DVD" series. Be sure to check out The Flintstones page to see the photos that I uploaded which better illustrate the packaging and disc printing issues mentioned below.

VHS : Fame (1980)
After reading a few pages of Richard Yates' celebrated novel A GOOD SCHOOL I tossed it onto the cushions of my bed, rebelliously thinking that if I wanted a disjunctive, multivalent account of four years of high school, the good times and the bad, I would rather be watching the DVD of FAME. Bruno Martelli, the hero, has a supportive father and uncle, a pair of colorful taxi drivers who cheer their boy's talent though they don't fully understand his drive to make music. And yet Bruno suffers from low self-esteem, thinking that he will never score with a girl, which seems sadly true, at least until his musical talent allows him to give Coco, his Puerto Rican muse, the sort of gift which a girl might really appreciate--a brace of pop tunes that might make people "remember her name."

VHS : Robocop
You don't really hear a lot about Robocop anymore, but this really was one of the biggest films of the 1980s. For a teenager like me, Robocop was the baddest dude in town back in 1987 - and now, twenty plus years later, he's still pretty much the baddest dude in town. The film really hasn't aged much at all, which came as a pleasant surprise to me. Some of the special effects involving the giant Enforcement Droid (ED-209) aren't impressive as they used to be, and that one shot looking down at someone falling to his death looks absolutely awful, but everything else, especially Robocop himself, works like gangbusters. It's still quite a gritty film, with loads of realistic violence (vintage Paul Verhoeven, in other words). In fact, Verhoeven had to edit out some of the film's over-the-top comic violence ... I thought you might like to know that the Description of this item contains two pieces of misinformation that should be corrected, if it can be. First, capital punishment was not declared unconstitutional in the 1960s. It was temporarily declared unconstitutional in 1972 (Furman v. Georgia), but re-instated in 1976 (Gregg v. Georgia). In any case, the last person executed prior to this hiatus was not Caryl Chessman (executed in 1960) but Luis Monge who was executed in Colorado in 1967. If the item itself is as full of misinformation as its description, I wouldn't trust it!

VHS : The Final Hit
Reynolds directed and stars in "The Final Hit", as Sonny Wexler, a movie producer who once produced an Oscar nominated movie, but now finds he's a has been in a Hollywood that's been taken over by the young generation, personified by studio executive Damon Black (Benjamin Bratt) and foreign investors. He now needs to raise $50,000 to buy a screenplay by a brilliant young writer (Sean Astin).

I'm not quite sure whether this movie tries to be a comedy or a drama, or both. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite succeed as either. The all-star cast is great (especially Rod Steiger, Bratt and Ann-Margret), but the script is uneven. There are several minor plot lines that are never developed, such as the one including Wexler's pill-popping wife Ann-Margret. She appears in several scenes and then goes off in a cab to somewhere (rehab?). ... Read More
