VHS : Casablanca (Aniv B&W)
Casablanca is perhaps considered one of the best well-done and most-respected movies of all time. Before I even watched the film, I knew that I would love it from start to finish. So if you are sitting at home wondering what movie to watch, I recommend Casablanca because you will not be disappointed. Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart both do an amazing job in this film. Also this Academy Award winner for Best Picture clearly deserves a round of applause. Perfect film for families, couples, or anyone who wants to enjoy a good movie. Next time you are at Blockbuster or ordering off of NETFLIX, choose Casablanca as your next movie to watch.

VHS : Night Train to Munich (B&W)
Having watched---and been quite enamored with Margaret Lockwood in "The Lady Vanishes" (3/4 of which takes place over rails), and having been impressed by that film's plot, dialogue, and direction I decided to board "The Night Train to Munich" so to speak, so as to continue the journey. Contrary to others herein, I cannot say that such was a wise decision on my part: First of all the quality of this film's recording is rather poor which doesn't help matters. Margaret Lockwood's role pales in comparison herein too; as this film is really one without a leading lady's role, notwithstanding Ms. Lockwood's talents. She was wonderful in Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes," but here has just not been given enough material to work with. (It's interesting to think that while "The Lady Vanishes" title ... Read More

VHS : Song of Love (1947)
Hollywood has such a bad reputation among historians, it's easy to dismiss the soap-opera-ish aspect of this film out of hand. It does state at the beginning that it takes certain liberties with chronology.

But it gets the essentials right. Robert and Clara Schumann had a life so full of dramatic incidents, it does seem like the most unlikely Hollywood screenplay. They *did* begin their married life in retreat from her overbearing father. They did have eight children. Later, the young Johannes Brahms, an unknown pianist and composer *did* show up on their doorstep, knocked their socks off with his genius, *was* invited to stay-- and *did* fall in love with Clara.
Robert *did* suffer from mental illness, and *did* die in an institution.

But more than that, I liked ... Read More

VHS : Now, Voyager (1942)
"The untold want by life and land ne'er granted,
Now, voyager, sail thou forth to seek and find."

~"The Untold Want" from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass"

It is perhaps one of Bette Davis' best films, one in which she reputedly became quite caught up in the role, playing an active part in the production decisions. Perhaps that is why the sets, costumes, and screenplay, as well as the flawless acting, raise "Now, Voyager" above the soap operatic level to a serious drama exploring the psychological implications of certain moral decisions. Although Bette could be convincing as a Southern Belle, playing New England spinster Charlotte Vale, a Daughter of the Pilgrims, suited her mannerisms and natural accent impeccably. However, it is Bette's ability to depict Charlotte's ... Read More

Remember when Hollywood used to care about our boys fighting overseas?

Remember when a Star would gladly pose for a picture with a fan?

Remember when a Star would sign as many autographs as possible?

Remember the good' ole days. That's what "Hollywood Canteen" is about.

"Hollywood Canteen" is a star-studded blockbuster from the 1940's. It revolves around two fictional characters that are on leave in Hollywood. What's there to do in the meantime? Well, go to the "Hollywood Canteen," of course!

Many of Hollywood's biggest starts of the 40's work at the "Hollywood Canteen." They entertain and serve the service boys.

This was Joan Crawford's first picture with Warners after her 18 year tenure with MGM abruptly ended. But, Joanie doesn't have ... Read More

VHS : Deception
Bette Davis is most well known for dominating the leading men with whom she was paired to act. For instance, her impeccable acting clearly over shadowed Bogart's performances. What makes "Deception" different from every other Bette Davis movie is being paired as the mistress of Claude Rains. If ever there was a grossly under-appreciated actor it is Claude Rains. While "Deception" is not his show, because all eyes are upon Davis (and her turquois eyes, as usual), when Rains goes after Davis' character in "Deception" it is the only time in Davis' acting history when a male supporting actor takes control of the lead. "Deception" is as intense a drama as it gets because of the dueling and riveting performances of Davis and Rains. While the plot is 'about' Henreid's character, his performance is in the background even though he was ... Read More

The story does no justice to the great cast of this movie. Every character seems a bit soft in his/her head in this flick.

VHS : 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse
In the opinion of this reviewer, this is far and away THE most underrated, underappreciated, and under-deserved film ever made.

No, Glenn Ford is not Valentino. But he brings his own personal brand of warmth, feeling, refinement, and particularly his trademark, unparalleled elegance to the role of the otherwise disreputable, antiheroic Julio, who eventually becomes, yes, every bit as heroic as Rick Blaine in "Casablanca."

Ingrid Thulin matches Mr. Ford in elegance and refinement, as well as gracing the screen with an enduring, radiant beauty, and, if that's Angela Lansbury's voice emanating from her lips, more power to it; its tones are a perfect fit for the exquisite creature with whose lips it is precisely synchronized.

Paul Henreid recreates an almost identical version of Victor Laszlo, except that ... Read More
