VHS : Valley of the Dolls (Spec)
DOLLS!!! What may have been at the time of release "shocking" dialogue is why Valley of the Dolls will live in infamy. "Well Broad-way doesn't go for booozze and pills." Helen Larson tells Neeley O'Hara at the start of their catfight in the powder room. Great fun to watch with your best Gay friends. Great extras included. Packaging is well done and comes with lobby cards.

VHS : Francis in the Navy
This is the sixth and final film of the series produced by Universal that included Donald O'Connor, and director Arthur Lubin, who created the sequence. It would be charitable to state that this entry is up to the best of its antecedents, as O'Connor's tongue-tied routine as the chowderheaded sidekick of Francis the talking mule has become rather exhausting for audiences by the time of this release. Army lieutenant Peter Stirling (O'Connor) is advised by Francis that the mule has been "drafted" into the Navy and is positioned as surplus to be auctioned at the Coronado (Calif.) base. While attempting to regain Francis' freedom, Peter is mistaken for a lookalike bosn's mate, Slicker Donovan, is captured by the Shore Patrol and must then reestablish his correct identity while disinvolving himself from ... VHS : Island of Lost Souls
I can only guess. It's not released due to hints of beastiality in the movie Island of Lost Souls??? IF so that's just rubbish.

Island of Lost Souls is a great, classic Friday night B&W horror flick that no collection should be without. Period. But we are forced to have a VHS or cheap bootleg. Mystery Of the Wax Museum is hardly a point of discussion here, a nice to have, but Island is a MUST HAVE!

Here is exactly what we need in a collection:
Island Of Lost Souls
Murders In The Zoo
House Of Horrors
The Mad Ghoul

Now how cool of a collection would that be???

HELLO Universal!!! Anyone home??

VHS : Elizabeth (1998)
Every aspect of this film is flawless. All period films should use this one as an example of how to bring history to life.

I can't speak much about the plot that hasn't already been discussed to death here and Amazon itself has done a decent job recapping the basics of this story. I'll resort to my simple Hits and Misses on this one:

The HITS:

1. This film is flawlessly acted by all. While Cate Blanchett dominates the screen and well-earned her Oscar nomination that year, Geoffrey Rush and the suburb, but under appreciated Sir Richard Attenborough (The Great Escape, A Passage To India and Jurassic Park) are outstanding in their supporting roles as is the rest of the terrific cast.

2. Exquisite photography, costume design, and settings bring this period ... Read More

VHS : Denver & The Rio Grande
Pop your popcorn and settle in for a 1950's-style Matinee Western that from an acting point of view is just barely a B-movie, but railroad enthusiasts will watch this VHS over and over again.

The true stars of this flick are the old Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge from Durango to Silverton, and the Colorado scenery. Rio Grande enthusiasts will also be totally intrigued by the rare opening footage of Rio Grande ALCO PA's in silver paint for CZ duty, and many FT and F3 covered wagons still in black paint fresh from the EMD factory erecting floors. There is even a short cab ride through Glenwood Canyon, and an interesting long shot at Dotsero.

Engines 268 and 315 are in bumble bee makeup, and while the story line is both campy and corny, the many action shots of these fine machines ... Read More

VHS : One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
I was fascinated to see this movie bring Solzhenitsyn's book to life. I'd seen bits of it as child before I'd read the novel and had always wanted to get a copy. Tom Courtney was wonderfully cast as Shukov. The rest of the cast was great also. The work gang's boss, the Baptists, the guards. My heart bled for "The Captain" again. Everybody who studies totalitarianism would do well to watch this film. The cinematography was gripping, you could feel the cold. "how can a man who's warm understand a man who's cold?"

10.Father of the Bride (1950) starring: Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, Elizabeth Taylor, Don Taylor, Billie Burke

VHS : Father of the Bride (1950)
I thought this movie would be a bummer when I saw the introduction, but it was better than I thought and pretty funny. Spencer Tracy plays the father to Elizabeth Taylor's bride, and he's hesitant about her marrying at the age of 20. But she won't be stopped, and all chaos ensues as the expenses and situational problems crop up along the way. However, there is a happy ending for all. It's a nice movie to see.
