1.Where Eagles Dare starring: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern

VHS : Where Eagles Dare
Clint Eastwood probably mowed down more of Adolf Hitler's German soldiers in Brian G. Hutton's "Where Eagles Dare" than he did western outlaws as either Sergio Leone's Man with No Name in the "Dollars" trilogy or criminals as "Dirty Harry" in his five Warner Brothers crime movies. Bestselling British author Alistair MacLean penned the splendid screenplay that he later converted into a much tamer novel about a team of elite British M.I. 6 secret agents that parachute into Germany to rescue one of the top-ranking officers with a mother lode of knowledge about the June 6th Normandy landings. This MGM blockbuster that runs 158 minutes is probably the greatest action-adventure movie with a World War II setting ever produced. We're talking wall-to-wall gunfire with more surprises and complications ... Read More

VHS : Cromwell
For a period piece about the English Civil War and the role that Oliver Cromwell and King Charles I played in it, this film is excellent. Both Richard Harris and Alec Guiness are perfectly cast as Cromwell and the King respectively and are surrounded by a fine supporting cast. Guiness at times is absolutely spellbinding as a King who slowly realizes that power is slipping from him and his performance is one of the greatest film representations of a Monarch I've ever seen. His trial scene is one of the film's highlights.
The sets and costuming are accurate and beautiful depicting 17th century England realistically. The battles and military scenes may lack absolute historical accuracy as some below have noted but nevertheless they are well done and brief enough not to distract from the overall ... Read More

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been checking periodically with amazon.com for the past four years on the off chance this movie might one day show up - AND SO IT FINALLY HAS!!!! Saw this once as a young child on Disney's weekly hour long show, back when they made and aired decent family shows on television every week, and I have never forgotten it. I've watched amazon.com come out with Three Lives Of Thomasina, Jungle Book, Toby Tyler, and Hans Brinker! Now if they will just go after "Almost Angels", "Big Red". and "Uncle Remos' Song of the South", I can die happy!!!!

Blood on Satan's Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971)

Overacted, underdirected seventies exploitation trash. I'd call it "plotless", but after reading a number of interviews and listening to a lot of commentary, I have come to realize there was a plot-- but either the movie is so badly-directed or was so badly cut by the censors (though I understand the version I watched was restored) that the plot was impossible to understand without the supplementary material.

In any case, it's about a 17th-century village in which people start coming down with a disease they call Satan's skin (the original title of the film). Meanwhile, a group of the village's children are falling under the spell of Angel Blake (Linda Hayden), a local girl who seems to be a rather powerful witch. Arrayed against the ... Read More

Even on her good days, Carol lives on the edge of sanity; she stares endlessly at sidewalks cracks, feels things crawling on her body, and doesn't respond to people. But when her sister leaves her alone for two weeks, Carol loses her grip on reality and goes completely mad.

Roman Polanski's first English language film is almost a silent movie with just a bit of dialogue. The action is mostly in Carol's mind, as she sees, hears, and feels the things that go bump in the night, fears many have felt at one time or another, but she loses herself in her horror. Twenty-two year old Catherine Deneuve also made her English language debut in the film and gives a stunning performance. Her fragile beauty contrasts with the ugliness and brutality of her hallucinations and the audience is swept along on ... Read More

VHS : Skull (1965)
It's good to see that this long lost film from Amicus productions finally gets a decent dvd release. This classic British horror film from the 60's had its moments but was slightly inferior to the other great Amicus horror films that came out later during the years that followed. Whats great about this film though is it's fantastic storyline which was written by Robert Bloch and it's great cast with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee at their best and a memorable role by Patrick Wymark as a sadistic and evil Judge in a dream sequence (watch the scene as he forces Peter Cushing's character to play Russian Roulette). The film was directed by Freddie Frances and he has such a visual flair adding a gothic look to the proceedings. Christopher Maitland (Peter Cushing excellent as usual) who is offered a skull and a fleshbound book ... Read More

VHS : Children of the Damned
Once you have seen "Village of the Damned" it is pretty much inevitable that you will check out "Children of the Damned," although you will find it impossible to avoid being less impressed with the sequel. Written by John Briley ("Invasion Quartet" and "Ghandi"), this 1963 film makes more sense if you think of it as a re-imagining of John Wyndham's original concept. Instead of all these children being born in one place looking the same, this time we have children born all over the place who look different. They still stare and they still control your minds, but now they are not children from a damned village but children from around the world.

Paul (Clive Powell) is from the United Kingdom, Mi Ling (Yoke-Moon Lee) is from China), Nina (Roberta Rex) is from the Soviet Union, Aga Nagolo (Gerald Delsol) is from an African ... Read More

VHS : Journey to Far Side of Sun
The premise of the movie is unique and this film is very well done. Roy Thinnes is great in his role. I expected it to be cheaper, B sci-fi in style, but its a serious, quality movie. I will say that the ending was unexpected and not what I wanted!
