VHS : The Pledge
While The Pledge will never be included in anyone's list of favorite Jack Nicholson movies. It is none the less a finely crafted film, with great performances by Patricia Clarkson, Benicio Del Toro, Dale Dickey and of course Jack Nicholson. Kudos to Sean Penn for delivering this psychological thriller with such clearity and suspense. There's an erie undercurrent of mystery and intrigue throughout the movie that leaves one feeling unsettled right to the very end.

Having recently made several light comedies, (As Good As It Gets, About Schmidt, The Bucket List and Somethings Gotta Give) all very good movies, Nicholson has had few dramatic roles of late that can compare with the great perfomances he gaves us from Five Easy Pieces (1970) to A Few Good Men (1992). The Pledge (2001) ... Read More

I actually sat through the entire movie waiting for something to happen - it didn't. This is one of those movies that the artsy fartsy set really like, maybe because there is a vertically-challenged gentleman in it. Who knows. For those of you who like movies with real plots and things like that, look elsewhere. This is one of those movies that feels like it was done by your brother in some film school project and really isn't much of a movie. I love trains, so at least there were trains, but other than that, I can't get my two hours back from sitting through this.

Well organized DVD, with plenty of extras. Learned quite a bit behind the scenes. Effective box, captures the Dirty Harry feel. You can't go wrong unless you are going to Blue Ray.

VHS : Miracle (2004)
One of the most motivating films ever created. I used it to teach teamwork concepts to the team leaders at work. We spent over 5 hours watching, stopping, discussing and digesting the approach. It was full of enough drama to hold everyone's attention.

VHS : Alex Haley's Queen (3 VHS Set)
Set in the old South, the story of Queen is a sad, but poignant one. The prejudice against her and the confusion and fear she endures because of her mixed heritage sheds light on the suffering of the times. The acting was great. I think this was one of the first leads for Halle Berry and she does a marvelous job. The only problem I had was her makeup. It's like they were trying to make her look lighter than what she was and her skin color would come out chalkie sometimes. Also, there was no way to confuse her with being white (because of her coloring and features), even when she was young (played by Raven-Symone), yet there was references to her being almost white as a sheet or something like that. Queen couldn't find help from white or black. Being of mixed heritage myself, it's hard enough these days, but during slavery ... Read More

VHS : Blind Man's Bluff (1991)
A blind professor's (Robert Urich) friends are being murdered. His ex-girlfriend (Lisa Eilbacher), now engaged to his best friend (Ron Perlman), wants to rekindle their romance. His therapist (Patricia Clarkson), for whom he has non-professional feelings, begins to reciprocate. Yes, it's a murder mystery with soap opera entanglements but it's a slightly better than average TV movie which makes for decent viewing on an order in dinner bad weather day.
Ron Perlman and Robert Urich have really nice buddy screen chemistry.

Hemingway's deceptively simple story of an old, out of luck Cuban fisherman's encounter with a marlin is elusive prey for the cinema. Contrary to popular opinion, the first film version with Spencer Tracy isn't that hot, and has a gassy ponderousness and air of fakery about it. Anthony Quinn is more freshly true and this little film also has great close up marlin footage as a compensation. Overall it is not only more authentic, both as to the fish and as to the Cuban setting, but also lighter and brighter. Frankly Quinn beats Tracy by a country mile; he isn't some white liberal worrying about portraying a Cubano with dignity, and gives you a well-rounded performance which admits the character's faults and a certain tendancy to be out of his head. That makes his quest believable and not simply fantastic. Hemingway did actually ... Read More

What makes this story so engaging is that much of it is told from the viewpoint of the children who have come with their parents to attend their grandfather's 77th birthday party. From listening to stories that Grandpa tells, the kids get the idea that he doesn't want to be buried (no worms!) when he dies, but would prefer to go out in a blaze with a Viking funeral. So when he dies unexpectedly and the kids discover it before any one else does, they set out to fulfill his wishes.
I've never really been a fan of Macaulay Culkin who plays the primary role here but this may be one of his best performances as a child actor. He brings all the sweetness and innocent child-like wisdom to the part that makes this story really work on so many levels. This is definitely a movie you'll want to watch more than once. You are guaranteed to laugh as ... Read More
